In a heartbreaking tragedy, longtime American Airlines flight attendant Celinda Levno, 71, was fatally stabbed during a layover in Denver, Colorado, on Saturday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation community and beyond, as authorities investigate what they are calling a “senseless crime.”
Levno, a Phoenix resident with over three decades of service, was attacked in a bustling pedestrian area in downtown Denver. Police believe the assailant targeted individuals who were alone. The suspect reportedly went on a stabbing spree, injuring two others with non-life-threatening wounds.
Denver Police spokesperson, Sgt. Daniel Harper, described the crime scene as “chaotic and tragic,” adding, “The victims appear to have been selected at random. This kind of violence has no place in our city.”
Levno sustained critical injuries after being stabbed in the throat. Despite undergoing hours of surgery, she tragically passed away. Her husband, Paul Levno, was notified by phone, leaving him, as he shared with local media, “devastated and in disbelief.”
American Airlines issued a statement, calling Levno’s death “a senseless crime.” The airline pledged to support law enforcement efforts and provide assistance to her family and colleagues.
“She was more than a colleague; she was family to us,” said an emotional statement from the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA). “Her dedication and warm spirit will never be forgotten.”
Levno’s love for life extended far beyond the skies. Known for her vibrant personality and deep passion for horses, she was often seen riding with pride, carrying an American flag. A skilled flutist, she combined her love of music and animals to bring joy to those around her.
“She was a remarkable woman, full of grace and energy,” said Josephine Dale, a close friend who shared fond memories of their horse-riding adventures. “Her love for horses and life will live on through all who knew her.”
Police are still searching for the suspect and have announced a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Surveillance footage is being reviewed to establish a clearer picture of the events leading up to the attacks.
Denver’s Mayor, Michael Johnston, condemned the violence, stating, “This attack on innocent citizens is a stark reminder of the challenges we face as a community. We will not rest until justice is served.”
Friends and family are sharing tributes online, remembering Levno for her kindness and unwavering spirit. “She was a beacon of light,” said longtime friend Yvonne Shields. “Her memory will inspire us to be better and kinder.”
As the investigation continues, Levno’s story stands as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact of a dedicated soul.
