The Barstool Sports community is grieving the loss of Jonathan Stanko, a production technician and cherished team member, who passed away at the age of 32 following a courageous battle with stage four Adenocarcinoma gastric cancer.

Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, expressed his profound sorrow in a heartfelt statement on social media. “This is the first time we’ve dealt with something this heavy in 20 years of Barstool. It’s a cruel reminder to never take a day for granted because tomorrow isn’t promised. #stankostrong,” Portnoy wrote, reflecting the deep impact of Stanko’s passing.

A Remarkable Journey at Barstool

Stanko joined Barstool Sports in 2021 after graduating from Iona College. Over nearly four years, he became a central figure in the outlet’s New York offices. Portnoy described Stanko as a rarity—someone universally loved within a high-energy, often irreverent workplace.

“Jonathan brought an unmatched energy and positivity that brightened our office every day,” said one of his colleagues, Kevin Clancy (KFC). “He was the kind of guy who made you laugh even on the worst days.”

Battling Cancer with Resilience

In April 2024, Stanko was diagnosed with stage four Adenocarcinoma gastric cancer. Despite the grim prognosis, he chose to approach his journey with openness and hope. In a personal blog post, Stanko detailed his initial shock at the diagnosis and the rapid changes in his life.

“The doctors gave me just over a year to live if chemotherapy didn’t work,” Stanko wrote. “But I’m not letting this disease define me. Every day is a gift.”

Amid treatments and uncertainty, Stanko celebrated one of the happiest moments of his life: marrying his longtime partner in a touching ceremony. “Jonathan’s wedding was a testament to his strength and love,” said coworker Ben Mintz. “He showed us how to embrace life even in the toughest times.”

Tributes Pour In

Tributes from colleagues, fans, and friends flooded social media following the news. Barstool personalities, including Dan Katz (Big Cat) and Ben Mintz, shared messages of love and remembrance.

“We lost one of the best today,” said Katz. “Jonathan’s legacy is one of kindness, humor, and resilience. He’ll always be part of the Barstool family.”

Remembering Jonathan Stanko

Stanko’s impact extended beyond his professional contributions. Friends and coworkers recalled his infectious smile, unwavering optimism, and ability to lift others’ spirits. “Jonathan wasn’t just a colleague; he was a brother,” Portnoy shared. “He leaves a hole in our hearts but also a reminder to live fully and love deeply.”

Barstool Sports plans to honor Stanko’s memory by raising awareness about gastric cancer and supporting organizations dedicated to fighting the disease. As Portnoy concluded in his tribute, “We’ll keep his spirit alive every day. Stanko Strong.”
