Judge Shoots Himself Dead in His Own Courtroom on Final Day in Office

A tragic discovery unfolded in Springfield, Georgia, as State Court Judge Stephen Yekel, 74, was found dead in his courtroom on Tuesday—his final day on the bench. Authorities believe the cause of death was suicide.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Effingham County Courthouse at 10:20 AM on reports of a potential suicide. Upon arrival, they found the body of Judge Yekel. According to Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie, it’s believed Yekel died the previous evening.

“It’s supposed to be a time for celebration, especially during the holidays,” McDuffie said. “But now, his family is dealing with an unimaginable tragedy.”

Yekel, appointed to the bench by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in 2022, had faced a difficult year. He lost his re-election bid earlier in 2024, and his term was set to end on December 31. His passing has left the legal community and local citizens in shock.

One of Yekel’s deputies discovered his body after being dispatched to the courthouse in response to the distress call. The sheriff confirmed that no court was in session on Tuesday, which made the situation even more eerie—Yekel had been preparing to step down.

In a letter to Governor Kemp dated December 2, Yekel made a formal request to resign following his election loss. He cited the results of the runoff election, in which he had won the initial round of voting in May but lost in the final round later in the year. Yekel expressed his frustration in the letter, describing the low voter turnout as unacceptable for such an important position.

“I feel that the office of State Court Judge of Effingham is too important to be decided by only 6% of the eligible voters,” Yekel wrote.

However, Governor Kemp rejected the resignation request, emphasizing that the results of a fair election should stand. “The election process must be upheld,” a spokesperson for the governor said, refusing further comment due to the ongoing investigation.

An Investigation Underway

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is set to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Sheriff McDuffie confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to confirm the details surrounding Judge Yekel’s passing.

Yekel, a member of the State Bar of Georgia since 1976, was well-regarded in his community and in legal circles, where he presided over preliminary criminal matters in Effingham County, just north of Savannah.
