Tim Walz Shocked by Election Defeat: “Thought the Country was Ready”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 election, has admitted he was caught off guard by their loss to President-elect Donald Trump. In his first post-election interview, Walz shared his thoughts on the campaign, its challenges, and his next steps.

Speaking to KSTP-TV on Thursday, Walz described the defeat as unexpected. “It felt like at the rallies, at the things I was going to, the shops I was going in, that the momentum was going our way, and it obviously wasn’t at the end,” he said. “So yeah, I was a little surprised. I thought we had a positive message and I thought the country was ready for that.”

A Campaign of High Hopes and Harsh Realities

Walz was handpicked by Harris to join the Democratic ticket, a decision some political analysts have since criticized. Philadelphia radio host Rich Zeoli recently called it “the biggest mistake her campaign made,” pointing to dissatisfaction among key Democratic power players.

Walz, however, remained diplomatic about his role in the campaign. “It was a privilege to be asked to serve with Vice President Harris. Certainly got to see America,” he reflected. When asked if he helped or hurt Harris’ chances, he demurred, saying, “History will write that. It wasn’t my decision to make.”

But the campaign faced steep challenges. According to Harris’ senior adviser, David Plouffe, the internal polls were consistently grim, even as public surveys suggested a closer race. “I think it surprised people because there were these public polls in late September, early October showing us with leads that we never saw,” Plouffe said on the podcast Pod Save America.

A Resounding Loss in Battleground States

Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, not only reclaimed critical battleground states but also made surprising gains in historically Democratic strongholds. The Harris-Walz ticket became the first Democratic duo to lose the popular vote since 2004.

Despite the tough loss, Walz expressed no regrets about his effort. “When you asked the question, ‘Were there things you could have done differently?’ Since we lost, the answer is obviously yes,” he acknowledged. “On this one, I did the best I could.”

Looking Ahead

While the campaign’s high-energy pace was thrilling, Walz admitted he’s eager to focus on governing Minnesota. “Coming back here now and having the privilege to do this work feels really good,” he said. “I’m actually really looking forward to this legislative session with some different dynamics around it.”

The loss has sparked debates within the Democratic Party about strategy, messaging, and the decisions that led to their defeat. For Walz, however, the focus is on moving forward. “You don’t dwell on it,” he said. “You learn, you grow, and you keep working.”

As Democrats regroup and Republicans celebrate their victory, one thing remains clear: the 2024 election will be dissected for years to come, not just for its shocking outcome but for the lessons it holds about the state of American politics.
