A race that was once a clear victory for Republican Rep. Michelle Steel has suddenly turned into a nail-biter, with Democratic challenger Derek Tran edging ahead by a razor-thin margin of just 36 votes.
The California 45th Congressional District, which includes parts of both Orange and Los Angeles Counties, has become ground zero for accusations of election fraud and rigging, as conservatives cry foul.
As of the latest count, Tran leads Steel by 152,981 votes to 152,945, with both candidates holding 50% of the vote share. This marks a stunning shift from days earlier, when Steel was up by more than 11,000 votes. Conservative figures are quick to claim foul play, despite no evidence of any irregularities.
“It’s Hard to Ignore the Pattern”
The accusations first surfaced when MAGA-backed social media platform Right Angle News Network posted a tweet alleging that “all across the country, provisional ballots and other ballots are being found, but they only seem to benefit one side.” The message went viral, quickly drawing fire from Republican voices, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
“This is how they’re stealing a House seat right under our noses,” Greene wrote in a repost. “We can’t let this go. Election rigging is happening in broad daylight, and we can’t let them get away with it.”
Rep. Lauren Boebert chimed in as well, taking aim at the state’s ongoing vote count. “2024 and California is still counting votes? Ridiculous,” Boebert tweeted. “Where is the RNC? This is an embarrassment.”
Geographic Divide Fuels Tensions
The vote count highlights a stark geographic split in the district. Steel is holding strong in her home turf of Orange County, leading by about 4,000 votes. But Tran is surging in the Los Angeles County portion of the district—an area that includes Artesia, Cerritos, and Hawaiian Gardens—where he’s up by nearly 18,000 votes.
“I knew it would be close, but the surge in LA County is impressive,” Tran commented in a recent statement. “We’re seeing a tremendous response from voters, and it’s paying off.”
Despite the accusations, election officials are adamant that the process is moving according to standard procedures. Both counties involved have confirmed no additional counting took place on Sunday, with the tally resuming Monday. Officials have not disclosed how many ballots are still left to count, leaving many conservatives suspicious of any further shifts in the results.
The Decline of Republican Dominance in Orange County
The dramatic tightening of this race comes amid a broader trend in Orange County, once considered a Republican stronghold. For years, suburban voters, mostly affluent and white, handed GOP candidates decisive victories. But Tran, a consumer rights attorney with ties to the local community, has made significant inroads in these traditional Republican areas.
“I’m proud of how we’ve run this campaign, focusing on issues that matter to all Californians,” said Tran, who co-owns a pharmacy with his wife, Michelle. “It’s been a tough fight, but we’re seeing the results of hard work and grassroots efforts.”
“This Is Just the Beginning”
Political commentator Gunther Eagleman added fuel to the fire, claiming that “California was working overtime to steal the election.” His post went viral on conservative channels, with many calling the late shift in the vote count “suspicious.”
As of now, election officials are still counting ballots, and no official winner has been declared. But with such a narrow margin and continued accusations of impropriety, the race is likely to remain under intense scrutiny in the coming days.
While California has long been a Democrat-dominated state, Republicans are still holding onto significant political influence in Southern California’s suburbs and rural areas. For now, the 45th District is at the heart of the battle to maintain GOP dominance in the state, with both sides gearing up for what could be a historic fight over the final count.
In this high-stakes race, both sides are digging in, with national implications on the line. The question remains: will Steel hold onto her seat, or is this another case of Democrats snatching a key victory from Republicans? Only time—and more ballots—will tell.
