Former President Bill Clinton is confident that America will soon elect its first female president, though he suggests that a conservative woman might have an easier time reaching the White House.

In an eye-opening interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith, Clinton shared his predictions ahead of the release of his book Citizen. While he acknowledged that society is moving to the right in response to political turmoil, he believes that a Republican woman could be the key to breaking the gender barrier.

Asked if America is ready for a female president, Clinton replied, “Maybe, but I think in some ways, we’ve moved to the right. It’s a reaction to all the turmoil. If Hillary had been nominated in 2008, she would have walked in, just like Obama did.” He hinted that the cultural battles currently consuming the nation might be making it harder for women to run for office, especially within the Democratic Party.

“I think it would probably be easier for a conservative Republican woman to win,” Clinton added. He pointed to the success of Margaret Thatcher in Britain, drawing a parallel between her rise and what could happen in America. “That’s what Maggie Thatcher did,” he said.

Clinton’s comments echo a growing sentiment that the conservative movement might be more welcoming to a woman leader. With strong female figures like Nikki Haley and Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders gaining prominence, the path for a Republican woman might just be smoother.

“I still think we’ll have a female president pretty soon,” he said optimistically. “It’s just a matter of timing and circumstances.” When pressed about whether he thought this would happen in his lifetime, he responded with humor: “Well, I don’t know how long I’m gonna live, but I hope I’m around for the next time. But right now, it’s President Trump’s turn in the barrel.”

Clinton didn’t just discuss the future of politics; he also expressed hope for a political change of heart from his successor. Reflecting on Trump’s polarizing presidency, Clinton suggested that Trump might eventually “think about whether, at this chapter of his life, he still thinks the most important thing is to have unquestionable domination.”

Smith pushed him on whether this was a realistic possibility, to which Clinton replied, “He might. I was raised in the Baptist Church. I believe in deathbed conversions.” With a wry smile, he added, “But I think the rest of us just have to be diligent, watch the signs, and stand up for what we think is right.”

As Clinton contemplates America’s political future, he also reflected on his own past, offering a supportive message about Monica Lewinsky’s public statements on bullying. He stated that he hoped she could move on and live a future not defined by their scandal. “She should be given a chance to build a life about her future,” he said, adding that his goal was to help her turn the page.

While Clinton remains hopeful for change, his comments underscore the shifting dynamics in American politics—and the possibility that a woman, especially from the right, could soon take the ultimate step into the Oval Office.
