In a horrifying early-morning tragedy, at least 10 residents perished when a fire tore through a nursing home in the small town of Villafranca de Ebro, near Zaragoza.

Firefighters rushed to the scene, but the flames spread rapidly through the facility, leaving a trail of devastation. The alarm was raised at dawn, sparking a desperate rescue effort for the elderly and vulnerable residents.

The home, a specialized center caring for individuals with dementia and mental health issues, housed 82 residents. Mayor Volga Ramírez stood solemnly before reporters, stating that intense smoke was the primary killer.

“It is due to smoke inhalation, not because they were burned,” she clarified, underscoring the deadly toll taken by the toxic fumes. “These residents were among our most vulnerable.”

Two residents remain in critical condition, clinging to life as medical staff work around the clock to stabilize them. Local officials have yet to determine what caused the blaze, though investigators are already on site, sifting through the charred remnants for answers.

Regional government head Jorge Azcón confirmed the tragic loss and announced the cancellation of all government events in Aragón as a gesture of respect. “Today is a day of mourning for us all,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, offering condolences to grieving families.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his own shock and dismay, reflecting on the heartbreak that has hit Spain’s elderly community twice in recent weeks. Just weeks ago, Spain was struck by deadly flash floods in Valencia that killed over 200 and destroyed countless homes.

As Spain reels from one disaster to another, questions arise about the safety and preparedness of facilities caring for the nation’s most vulnerable.

As families and officials grapple with this latest tragedy, Villafranca de Ebro mourns for those lost, once again reminded of the fragility of life and the perils facing Spain’s elderly.
