MSNBC Host Blasts Pelosi for Orchestrating Biden’s ‘Public Demise’

A former senior adviser to President Joe Biden is laying blame at the feet of Nancy Pelosi for what she called the “very public demise” of Biden’s presidential campaign, accusing the former House Speaker of playing a pivotal role in the ultimate loss of Vice President Kamala Harris to Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Symone Sanders-Townsend, who served as a key adviser to Biden and as spokesperson for Harris before joining MSNBC in 2022, did not hold back during a fiery panel discussion on MSNBC’s The Weekend on Sunday. Addressing the Democratic Party’s catastrophic missteps leading to Harris’s defeat, Sanders-Townsend directly called out Pelosi, a longtime Democratic power broker, for pushing Biden out of the race.

“Everybody talks about how Pelosi was this brilliant strategist, how she could count votes, how she orchestrated victories in Congress,” Sanders-Townsend said. “But where is that magic now? Where is your calculator now, Nancy?”

Her remarks come in the wake of the disastrous 2024 election, where Harris, Biden’s chosen successor, ultimately lost to former President Donald Trump. Sanders-Townsend placed part of the blame on Pelosi’s role in pressuring Biden to step aside after a chaotic debate performance in June, during which Biden struggled with memory lapses and incoherent speech.

Sanders-Townsend, a seasoned political strategist who has been at the center of the Democratic Party’s messaging for years, argued that Pelosi’s actions leading to Biden’s exit from the race left the party with few options and hastened the loss.

“She played in presidential politics this cycle, and she helped orchestrate the very public demise of the president,” Sanders-Townsend said, adding that it was Pelosi’s influence that made Biden’s endorsement of Harris seem rushed and prematurely final.

The fallout from Biden’s withdrawal was swift. Biden’s decision to step aside in favor of Harris came just after his lackluster debate performance, where he struggled to string coherent sentences together, fueling doubts about his fitness for office. The president’s abrupt endorsement of his vice president led to a controversial decision: Biden’s early exit left no room for an open primary within the party, effectively locking Harris into the nomination.

Pelosi, however, has justified her position, arguing that Biden’s endorsement of Harris prevented the party from holding a more competitive primary. Speaking to The New York Times, Pelosi said, “Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” adding that Biden’s early endorsement of Harris made it “almost impossible” for other Democrats to mount a credible challenge.

“The anticipation was that if the president were to step aside, there would be an open primary,” Pelosi stated.

Though Pelosi’s influence is undeniable in the Democratic Party, Sanders-Townsend painted a stark picture of the impact Pelosi’s actions had on the party’s chances in the general election. She suggested that Pelosi, who had long been seen as a tactical genius, failed to account for the public perception of Biden’s forced exit, which only fueled the perception that the party was fractured and directionless.

“This wasn’t just a mistake for Biden—it was a mistake for the entire party,” Sanders-Townsend argued. “We’re about to lose the dang House, and it’s not just because of one person’s failed debate performance—it’s because of the power plays that were made behind the scenes.”

Sanders-Townsend’s sharp criticisms come amid broader frustrations within the Democratic Party about their inability to rally behind a clear and cohesive vision for the future. With Biden’s early exit and Harris’s subsequent loss to Trump, many party leaders are now looking for answers about what went wrong.

In the weeks following Biden’s withdrawal, Sanders-Townsend was among those who privately voiced concerns about the lack of leadership and direction within the party. Yet, she also offered praise for Biden himself, noting that despite the internal turmoil, the president remained steadfast in his commitment to his vice president.

“Thank God for Joe Biden,” Sanders-Townsend said. “At least he had the backbone to endorse Kamala Harris. These people wanted an open primary—for what?”

As the dust settles from the bitter 2024 election, questions remain about how much damage was done by Pelosi’s intervention and whether the party can recover from its stunning loss to Trump. With leadership changes likely on the horizon, Sanders-Townsend’s blunt assessment is sure to echo through Democratic circles for some time.
