A horrifying tragedy struck near the Comoros Islands late Friday night as a boat carrying around 30 migrants was allegedly capsized on purpose by traffickers, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 people, including children.

Survivors recount a night of terror at sea as traffickers reportedly overturned the boat between the islands of Anjouan and Mayotte. Fishermen discovered five survivors the following morning, but for the rest, it was too late.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), this heart-wrenching incident is the latest in a string of deadly tragedies plaguing this treacherous route. IOM’s spokesperson for Comoros stated, “We are devastated to hear about the unnecessary loss of life due to the reckless actions of traffickers who seem to disregard human lives entirely.”

The boat carried people of various nationalities, among them seven women and four children, IOM confirmed. This horrifying disaster is far from isolated. Just last month, another boat with 12 individuals—among them two children and a pregnant woman—vanished after setting out from Anjouan, never making it to Mayotte. In August, eight people, including a 12-year-old boy, drowned on the same route.

The perilous waters surrounding Mayotte, a French-administered département and the most sought-after destination within the Comoros archipelago, have become an increasingly deadly crossing.

The island’s disputed political status has only heightened tensions, fueling both migration and crackdowns. Since France’s official designation of Mayotte as a département in 2011, thousands of migrants have lost their lives attempting this route, drawn by promises of a better life.

The IOM continues to urge governments to address these tragedies by creating safe, legal channels for migration. “It’s time to prevent these senseless deaths and uphold the dignity of those in search of safety and opportunity,” the agency declared in its statement.

Without significant intervention, this route—and many others like it—may continue to exact a deadly toll on innocent lives, especially the most vulnerable among us.
