As Election Day looms just three days away, tensions are reaching a fever pitch across the nation. On Saturday, a rally in support of Vice President Kamala Harris turned violent when a teenage Trump supporter allegedly punched a 70-year-old woman, Kathleen Tomasko, in the stomach.
The shocking incident took place at the north end of the Roosevelt Bridge on U.S. 1 in Stuart, Florida.
The suspect, a 17-year-old boy wearing a provocative T-shirt emblazoned with an image of former President Donald Trump giving the middle finger against a backdrop of the American flag, allegedly assaulted Tomasko without warning. Police reports indicate the teen struck Tomasko hard enough to knock her off her feet, leaving her shaken and bruised.
“It was completely out of nowhere,” Tomasko recounted. “I was just standing there when this kid turned around and punched me. I didn’t see him coming; I had no time to react. I just felt this sharp blow in my stomach, and then I was on the ground.” Tomasko, a longtime resident of Stuart, expressed her disbelief and distress, saying, “I’ve been at rallies for decades, and I’ve never experienced anything like this.”
The rally, part of a nationwide Women’s March in support of Harris and Florida’s Amendment 4, drew participants who hoped to make a peaceful stand on women’s rights. Amendment 4, which is up for vote on Tuesday, would enshrine abortion rights protections in the Florida state constitution.
Tomasko noted that she noticed a group of teenage boys at the rally who appeared to be antagonizing the crowd. “There were these four boys — you know, Trump supporters,” she said. “They were taunting people, and some people were taunting them back. It was just a back-and-forth. I never expected it to end like this.”
According to Stuart Police Department spokesperson Brian Bossio, event security initially spotted the teenager leaving the scene after the altercation. “Several witnesses pointed out a male suspect who was walking away from the area,” Bossio explained. “I was able to detain him and bring him to the car. The teenager has since been charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older.”
Witnesses reported that the teen had just walked away from a separate argument with another Harris supporter before allegedly turning his attention on Tomasko. The sudden attack left her with soreness in her hip after the fall. While she initially declined medical attention, she later mentioned she might need to see a doctor.
Despite the altercation, the rest of the rally remained peaceful, and no additional arrests were made. Bossio confirmed that there were no other reports of violence at the event. Tomasko, however, remains shaken, lamenting that political divisions have led to increased hostilities at events meant to bring communities together.
Reflecting on the incident, Tomasko said, “My friend called me from Massachusetts and said, ‘Kathy, we’ve done rallies like this for years. I can’t believe this happened to you.’ I can’t believe it either.”
