Teen Murders 5 Family Members After being Told ‘No’

Raymond Ronald Lee Childs III, now 21, was at the center of a deadly family confrontation that erupted when his father, Raymond Childs Jr., insisted he return home rather than spend the night at his girlfriend’s house.

Prosecutors describe the argument as a flashpoint that unleashed a deadly chain of events inside the Childs family home, as Childs III armed himself and moved from room to room, firing relentlessly. His father, stepmother, and siblings were caught in the bloodbath, which left five dead and one critically injured.

Authorities revealed the grim details in court: Childs III was convicted on six counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after he fatally shot his father, Raymond Childs Jr., 42; his stepmother, Kezzie Childs, 42; his 13-year-old sister, Rita Childs; his 18-year-old brother, Elijah Childs; and Elijah’s pregnant girlfriend, Kiara Hawkins, 19, who was carrying an unborn child.

In a rare turn of fate, his 15-year-old brother managed to escape, though he too had been shot and sustained life-threatening injuries.

This sole survivor recounted the haunting moments leading up to the massacre, recalling his father’s last words to Raymond: “I’m sorry, Raymond. I love you.” The words were met with gunfire, a final blow that solidified Childs III’s path to multiple homicide charges.

The tragedy drew national attention as details emerged of how Childs III fled the scene, attempting to evade law enforcement. Police tracked down his vehicle, which had been parked at his girlfriend’s home, before eventually locating him at a relative’s house the following day.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, describing the aftermath, remarked, “What occurred inside that home is as unfathomable today as it was in 2021. It has been an incredibly difficult journey for the family and friends of the six people that we tragically lost.”
