Hollywood icon Shirley MacLaine, with a nearly seven-decade career and countless films, has crossed paths with many of the world’s most powerful figures—and she’s not afraid to tell the stories.
In her new memoir The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories from This Marvelous Lifetime, the 90-year-old Academy Award-winning actress gives fans an intimate peek into her experiences with 13 U.S. presidents. That’s every president since 1945—except one.
“I never encountered [Richard] Nixon,” MacLaine writes with her signature bluntness. “I thought he was ridiculous and wouldn’t want to have met him.” From Harry Truman to Joe Biden, MacLaine’s memoir captures these high-profile meetings through stories and exclusive, never-before-seen photos.
Among her memories, MacLaine recalls President Jimmy Carter’s “intelligence,” Ronald Reagan’s Hollywood charm, and an uncomfortable encounter with Donald Trump. “I was looking at an apartment in his 666 Fifth Avenue building in Manhattan,” MacLaine recently told PEOPLE. “Trump was there, and we ended up alone in a room. I could tell in his head he was undressing himself—and me. I got out of there fast. Didn’t take the apartment either. It was too expensive.”
The book, however, is not solely focused on political leaders. MacLaine also touches on her roles in Hollywood’s unforgettable moments. She was present at President John F. Kennedy’s famous 1962 birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden, where Marilyn Monroe serenaded the president in her breathy “Happy Birthday” tribute.
MacLaine recalls performing with Jimmy Durante for Kennedy that night and attending the exclusive afterparty. One photo shows her with the youngest Kennedy brother, Ted, 22 years later, reminiscing about the infamous night and the Kennedy family’s escapades.
The actress also reveals she once dated a political leader herself—Australia’s Liberal Party figure, Andrew Peacock. “The world of politics and show business aren’t so far apart,” she notes, adding that her unique life has been “a fabulous mix of the powerful, the legendary, and the scandalous.”
The Wall of Life is a time capsule for fans of Hollywood history, capturing moments that blur the lines between celebrity and political power. It’s available now at major booksellers.
