The bodybuilding community is mourning the loss of Lenny Persin, better known as “Big Lenny,” who passed away at 60. The larger-than-life figure had been reportedly battling congestive heart failure prior to his death, a fact that close friends confirmed. His passing was announced by fellow bodybuilder and fitness personality Dave Palumbo in a heartfelt YouTube video this past weekend.
Palumbo said, “Big Lenny Persin is no longer with us. He passed over the last couple days, we’re not really sure exactly what day. He was suffering from congestive heart failure for quite some time now.”
Big Lenny’s unconventional journey in the bodybuilding world earned him cult-like status. His role as the leader of the Del Rey Misfits, a group of bodybuilders known for their antics and tight-knit bond, solidified his place as an underground icon. Despite not fitting the traditional mold of a bodybuilder, Big Lenny left an indelible mark on the sport with his unique personality, physical presence, and unfiltered approach to life and fitness.
Known for his eccentric appearance, particularly his protruding stomach caused by palumboism (a condition often linked to the use of human growth hormone and insulin), Lenny embraced his unconventional look and carved out a space for himself in the competitive bodybuilding scene. His condition made him stand out, and while he didn’t sport the typical chiseled abs of other competitors, he had a passion and drive that was undeniable.
One of his last major competitions was the 2017 NPC Ruby Championship, where he secured second place. His goal was never just about winning but about being the largest, most imposing figure on stage. His fearlessness, both in physique and character, resonated with fans who admired his relentless pursuit of his vision for himself.
Beyond his physicality, Big Lenny was known for his often outrageous and raw commentary on life, philosophy, and fitness. His unfiltered discussions became a major draw in the online bodybuilding community, where his videos and opinions made him a cult figure. Whether talking about bodybuilding or sharing his unconventional life views, he did so with a candidness that set him apart.
In a touching tribute, fitness industry expert Jon Bravo recalled Big Lenny as a “gentle giant,” saying, “One of the biggest guys in the room, and, you know, if there’s one thing we can all learn from Big Lenny, it’s that he lived each day to the fullest… each day, he had a smile on his face, and each day he found a way to make himself happy.”
Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with fans remembering him as a “big gentle giant” who never intended to offend but simply lived life on his own terms. His authentic, often controversial approach won him a legion of fans who appreciated his realness in an industry often obsessed with perfection.
Big Lenny’s death marks another significant loss in the fitness world, but his legacy—his passion, his unfiltered personality, and his pursuit of happiness—will continue to inspire those who followed his journey. As the tributes flow in, one thing is clear: Big Lenny was much more than just a bodybuilder; he was a force of nature, unapologetically himself to the very end.
