In a bold and unconventional move, a Tampa man known as “Lieutenant Dan” is braving Hurricane Milton from the deck of his boat, anchored in Tampa Bay.

The man, who goes by Jay on his TikTok account, spoke with The Weather Channel on Monday, sharing his faith-driven decision to remain on the water despite the impending storm. “I know that God didn’t bring me this far for something to happen to me,” Jay said in a clip that’s now gaining traction on social media.

Jay, who is an amputee, isn’t new to weathering storms. He previously rode out Hurricane Helene, which wreaked havoc across Florida late last September. While many are concerned about rising waters, Jay says his main worry is the fierce winds that could sweep his boat out to sea.

“The more you go through it, the more you learn,” he told the reporter. “I’m confident in my ability to ride it out unless it turns into a Wizard of Oz-type situation, and I wind up in Kansas.”

Despite law enforcement advising him to evacuate, Jay remains anchored, citing a broken motor and the high winds as reasons for staying put. His determination to stick it out has captured the attention of many online, with his laid-back yet resolute attitude resonating with viewers. “I’ll be here. I’ll see you Friday,” he said, closing out the interview with a smile.

As Hurricane Milton approaches, Jay’s story serves as a reminder of both the resilience and audacity of individuals in the face of nature’s most powerful forces. Here’s hoping he stays safe while weathering the storm from his floating home.
