High School Senior, 18, Dies After Collapsing at Finish Line

A Missouri family is heartbroken after the sudden and tragic death of Rudy “Junior” Zevallos, an 18-year-old high school senior, who collapsed and died after crossing the finish line of a half marathon this past weekend.

The young athlete, known for his determination and competitive spirit, was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital, according to The Kansas City Star.

Zevallos’ family launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses, remembering him as a remarkable son, brother, and friend. “Junior was driven by a competitive spirit and a relentless determination to master any and all challenges,” they wrote in a heartfelt tribute.

He was passionate about self-improvement, investing, and studying the Bible, always striving to become the best version of himself. His loss, they added, is “impossible to summarize,” as he meant so much to so many.

The exact cause of his death remains unclear, but the family shared that his body temperature had reached a fatal level, causing his heart to stop.

Zevallos was a senior at Lebanon High School, where he played football, ran track, and wrestled. He had recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to follow in his father’s footsteps. In a Facebook post, the school expressed its grief, saying, “This is a very difficult time for our school community,” and extended its deepest condolences to the family and friends.

His family offered one final note about his marathon goal: “Junior wanted to finish in under two hours. He did, completing the race in one hour and fifty-eight minutes.” His passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, but his legacy of determination and strength continues to inspire.
