Former President Donald Trump expressed strong discontent following the release of a 165-page motion filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith. This document outlines Trump’s actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election, detailing his efforts to regain power.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump characterized the document’s unsealing as a politically motivated act by Democrats. He reiterated these claims during an almost two-minute interview with NewsNation, where he asserted that the accusations against him were not new. Trump also claimed victory in a separate classified documents case in Florida and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, stating she was “more incompetent than Biden.”
In his initial reaction, Trump described the document as “falsehood-ridden” and accused the Biden administration of attempting to interfere in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He suggested that the timing of the release was aimed at undermining his campaign, particularly following what he called a poor debate performance by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Trump further labeled the legal proceedings against him as a “partisan, unconstitutional witch hunt” and claimed that his prominence in the election cycle is causing “radical Democrats” to panic. He accused the Democratic Party of engaging in “the worst election interference in American history” and claimed they were using the Justice Department against him to support their candidate.
The unsealed documents reveal a timeline of Trump’s reactions to events surrounding the Capitol on January 6, including his comments about then-Vice President Mike Pence’s safety. In one instance, Trump reportedly remarked, “So what?” upon learning that Pence had been moved to a secure location.
The Trump campaign responded to the document release, with spokesperson Steven Cheung stating to Reuters that the case is a “partisan, unconstitutional witch hunt.” Trump reiterated his criticisms of Jack Smith during his NewsNation interview, calling him “deranged” and suggesting that the release of the documents was a strategic move to influence the election.
Despite the legal challenges he faces, Trump claimed his poll numbers have risen and maintained that the information released is not damaging. He continues to assert that the 2020 election was rigged against him, a claim he has made repeatedly in recent statements.
