In a shocking incident, a Mexican national was gunned down in broad daylight near the luxury Riu Caribe resort in Cancun, with the assailants escaping on jetskis as frightened tourists sheltered inside.

The shooting occurred around noon on Wednesday and is believed to be a targeted attack, according to the Riviera Maya News. Eyewitnesses reported that at least two gunmen approached the unidentified victim, thought to be in his 30s, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.

The hotel confirmed that the victim was neither a guest nor an employee. Videos circulating on social media captured the tense atmosphere as guests in swimwear gathered in the hotel lobby, where nightly rates can reach up to $350.

Mexican authorities revealed that the victim might be connected to a previous incident involving the tragic shooting death of a 12-year-old boy during a similar attack on the beach over the summer. In that case, two gunmen on jetskis opened fire, mistakenly killing the child while targeting a rival drug dealer.

In light of this violence, the U.S. State Department has reiterated its travel advisory, urging American tourists to exercise increased caution when visiting Mexico. The department noted that violent crime, including homicide and kidnapping, is prevalent in the country, and the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services in many areas.
