A self-styled engineer, known as the “world’s greatest daredevil”, tragically lost his life in a failed attempt to prove that the Earth is flat using a homemade rocket.

The chilling footage of Mike Hughes’ unfortunate demise, affectionately referred to as ‘Mad Mike’, was captured while filming for the TV series, Homemade Astronauts. In a horrifying twist, the parachute of the 64-year-old’s rocket appeared to malfunction mid-flight, causing it to crash back to earth.

The 2020 launch aimed to see Mad Mike ascend up to 5,000 feet, but instead, an audience watched in horror as the rocket crashed near Barstow, California. Hughes and his team had built the homemade rocket in his backyard at a cost of around $18,000.

Before the tragic incident, the daredevil had expressed his belief that the earth was flat or “shaped like a Frisbee”, and he intended to confirm this by flying into space. Darren Shuster, Mike’s publicist said: “I don’t think he believed it,” and added “He did have some conspiracy theories. But don’t confuse it with that flat Earth thing.”

Shuster also told TMZ that Mike was truly “one of a kind”, stating: “When God made Mike he broke the mold. The man was the real deal and lived to push the edge. He wouldn’t have gone out any other way.”

Eric Sherwin, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department, has clarified they had no prior knowledge of Mike Hughes’ fatal rocket launch. Apparently baffled by the lack of communication surrounding the event, he revealed that official measures would be taken to investigate the circumstances.

It’s reported a private emergency service provider, Desert Ambulance, was desperately rushed to the scene. According to Sherwin, “They pronounced a single person deceased.”

Hughes’ daredevil antics, in constructing and piloting homemade rockets, attracted global attention drawing in everyone from documentary filmmakers to reality show producers. His admirers helped finance his pursuits, even getting their names featured on his rockets as a small thank you, explained Shuster.

Mr. Sherwin lauded Hughes’ daring spirit, declaring: “He was this generation’s Evel Knievel,” offering homage to the renowned stunt performer and entertainer.
