In a chilling courtroom revelation, an American father accused of the murder of his 6-year-old son has stunned jurors by claiming that his child’s death was caused by pneumonia, not the traumatic treadmill workout he subjected the boy to a couple weeks before his death.
Christopher Gregor, 31, is currently facing trial for the murder of Corey Micciolo, who died in 2021, two weeks after an alarming treadmill session that left him severely bruised and battered.
The shocking details emerged during the opening statements of Gregor’s trial, as his lawyer, Mario Gallucci, addressed the court, painting a harrowing picture of the events that led to Corey’s death. “When you see that video, you’re going to be horrified,” Gallucci told jurors, as reported by the Asbury Park Press. “Corey’s death had absolutely nothing to do with that treadmill.”
Prosecutors, however, vehemently oppose this narrative, arguing that the child’s fatal injuries were the direct result of chronic abuse inflicted by his father. The ordeal unfolded at the Atlantic Heights Clubhouse fitness centre in New Jersey on March 20, 2021, captured by surveillance footage that reveals a distressing sequence of events.
The video footage shows Gregor subjecting his young son to a gruelling treadmill regimen, purportedly because he believed the child was overweight. Increasing both the speed and incline, the workout proved too much for Corey, who was thrown off the treadmill multiple times.
Despite attempts to assist the struggling child back onto the machine, the brutal session continued until Gregor finally relented, lowering the speed and offering the boy a reprieve.
Testifying in Superior Court in Ocean County, Corey’s mother, Breanna Micciolo, recounted her disturbing discovery of bruises on her son following the workout. “He had a bruise on his forehead,” she told the jury, detailing the peculiar markings she noticed.
A paediatrician visit revealed no serious concerns, although Corey confided to the doctor that his father had forced him onto the treadmill due to weight concerns.
Corey’s health deteriorated rapidly after the treadmill incident. On April 2, 2021, he awoke from a nap disoriented and nauseous, prompting his father to rush him to the hospital. Corey was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The case took a significant turn when a forensic pathologist’s report in September 2021 concluded that Corey’s death was a homicide resulting from chronic child abuse, including blunt force injuries and a laceration to the heart. Gregor was subsequently arrested on murder charges, leading to his trial in 2022.
During cross-examination, Breanna Micciolo also admitted to acts of vandalism against Gregor’s parents’ home in the wake of Corey’s death.
