A New Mexico police officer died in an alleged attack while responding to a trespassing call. Police said the suspect was shot by a bystander.

Police officer Jonah Hernandez of the Las Cruces Police Department died in the hospital after he was stabbed at least once when he responded to a trespassing call around 5 p.m. Sunday.

The incident happened on the 300 block of South Valley Drive, near Amador Avenue.

Police believe Hernandez was stabbed by the suspect who allegedly trespassed onto the property.

Based on their preliminary information, the suspect was shot and killed by a person who witnessed part of the incident.

The suspect’s identity has not been revealed yet, but police described him as a 29-year-old man.

The witness used the fallen officer’s radio to call for help, according to police.

Hernandez was rushed to Mountain View Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Police said Hernandez was a two-year veteran of LCPD, but originally from El Paso, Texas.

Hernandez is survived by a wife and two sons.

The crime scene remained closed Sunday evening due to the investigation.
