Thanks to the Wright Brothers, Ohio is rich in aviation history and is poised to lead the way in cutting-edge aircraft manufacturing. At Dayton International Airport, Joby Aviation Inc. has been selected to open a production plant for electric air taxis. This innovation is a big step toward the eventualization of flying commuter cars, a la “The Jetsons” cartoon series.

The Announcement from Ohio

The plans for this innovative project were revealed on Monday by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, head of the Ohio Department of Development Lydia Mihalik, and president and CEO of JobsOhio J.P. Nauseef. The construction of an electric air taxi manufacturing facility at Dayton International Airport has been awarded to Joby Aviation Inc.

“Ohio’s legacy in aviation leadership begins with the Wright Brothers and continues now with Joby Aviation, as they launch a new era in advanced aviation manufacturing and aerial mobility in Dayton,” Governor DeWine said, expressing his delight.

What to anticipate

The Dayton International Airport facility will produce electric air taxis intended for use by businesses carrying passengers. There will be enough for four passengers and a pilot on these all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxis. These cars, which have a 100-mile range and a top speed of 200 mph, mark a major advancement in urban mobility solutions.

Joby Aviation is putting up a minimum of $477.5 million into this project, with aspirational goals of producing 500 cars a year. 2025 is when the manufacturing operations are expected to start, and the following year is when building is expected to start.

The Historical Significance of Ohio

Ohio is home to the Wright Brothers, who accomplished the first powered flight in history, and has a long history in aviation. The choice made by Joby Aviation to locate its manufacturing facility in Ohio highlights Ohio’s ongoing significance in aviation innovation.

Economies and Employment Generation

It is anticipated that the project will create approximately 2,000 jobs in the area, hence increasing employment prospects and strengthening the local economy. This increase in employment and economic activity demonstrates Ohio’s dedication to developing the aviation sector and adopting cutting-edge technologies.

FAA Accreditation and Partnerships

Joby Aviation was able to test-fly its eVTOL aircraft prototype in June after receiving a Special Airworthiness Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Obtaining this accreditation was a big step toward creating electric air taxis for business use.

Additionally, Joby Aviation has forged partnerships with top players in the aviation and transportation industries, including Toyota and Delta Air Lines. Using eVTOL aircraft, Delta and Joby collaborated to provide a home-to-airport transportation service in New York and Los Angeles. Toyota was crucial in helping Joby set up its test production line in California, and it will still offer advice and support when the business starts producing in Ohio.
