The hunt for Kevin Mason, a murder suspect who was mistakenly freed from an Indiana jail by a clerk, has been stepped up by the authorities.
Mason, 28, was apprehended this week after being wanted for more than two years in connection with a Minneapolis murder that occurred in 2021. On September 13, just two days after his arrest, he was inadvertently released from the Adult Detention Center in Indianapolis due to a “faulty records review by civilian staff,” as the Marion County Sheriff’s Office clarified.
Authorities have since expanded their search after learning that Mason departed Indianapolis on the same evening that he was released. Additionally, in regions where Mason is known to have contacts, they have interacted with law enforcement officials.
Almost a hundred law enforcement personnel from diverse agencies were dispatched to Indianapolis to pursue many leads in the case. Because of this thorough search, investigators have looked into leads outside of Indianapolis and in parallel investigations conducted in other locations.
Now in charge of the investigation is the US Marshals Service, which is also offering a $10,000 prize for information that results in Mason’s apprehension. Kerry Forestal, the sheriff for Marion County, expressed confidence in his ability to find and apprehend Kevin Mason.
According to Forestal, Mason was arrested on September 11 and unintentionally released on September 13 at approximately 11:05 a.m. A few hours later, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the release was reported to the authorities. Mason made a ride-call during the meantime, and his girlfriend, Desiree Oliver, picked him up close to the jail. After being freed, Oliver acted in a way that was compatible with aiding an escaped person. The sheriff claimed that she bought men’s underwear, a travel pack, and men’s slippers from a Walmart.
Oliver’s movements were quietly monitored by investigators, who opted not to make the suspect’s whereabouts public. She was taken into police custody on Wednesday after being accused of aiding a criminal.
In relation to Mason’s incorrect release, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office fired two employees.
Mason is charged with shooting and killing 29-year-old Dontevius Catchings in a Minneapolis church parking lot in June 2021 during a funeral ceremony. After the incident, he was charged with second-degree murder and possession of guns by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
Sharita Catchings, Catchings’ mother, has expressed her agony and called the suspect’s search “unbearable.” The inquiry into Kevin Mason’s whereabouts is still ongoing, and the family is still seeking justice for Dontevius Catchings.
