A woman’s heroic escape from a homemade “dungeon” resulted in the arrest of Oregon resident Negasi Zuberi, 29, in a terrible case of kidnapping and sexual assault that has shocked the nation.
Law enforcement is on high alert after Zuberi was apprehended because the FBI suspects he may be involved in a string of violent assaults that have occurred in many states. The organization is currently looking for additional victims who might have been the targets of his alleged offenses.
The terrifying events started when a woman was able to escape Zuberi’s cinder block-built home in Oregon. She was put in handcuffs and leg irons during the terrifying encounter when Zuberi pretended to be an undercover police officer in Seattle to request her assistance. The victim disclosed that she had experienced sexual assault throughout her journey.
Zuberi, who has a history of relocating between states, was hauled into federal jail on suspicion of interstate kidnapping. His capture follows the victim’s remarkable escape from a makeshift cell that Zuberi had built in his garage. In this case, the FBI’s investigation has revealed a troubling pattern that spans several states and years.
Authorities claim that between August 2016 and July 2023, Zuberi targeted sex workers and roommates in a number of locations, including California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, and Nevada. The suspect is thought to have employed a variety of strategies to earn the trust of his victims, including impersonating a police officer, slipping drugs into their drinks, and hiring sex workers before committing severe sexual attacks.
The FBI was concerned that Zuberi may have recorded some of the interactions to make them appear consensual and then threatened his victims with retaliation if they reported the offenses to the authorities.
The FBI has appealed for help from the public after Zuberi was arrested and his alleged illicit activities were later discovered. Authorities suspect there may be more victims out there who haven’t come forward. The agency is requesting cooperation from anyone who may have knowledge about Zuberi’s behavior or possible victims in the current inquiry.
As the case develops, the pursuit of justice and the possible identification of further victims serve as a somber reminder of the value of public vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement in ensuring the safety of society’s most vulnerable members.
