A California babysitter has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a toddler and has also been connected to the serious injuries of another kid, in a stunning and upsetting case.
On June 29, Heather Greenman, 37, was taken into custody in Beaumont, an area 80 miles east of Los Angeles. Greenman’s bail was set at $1 million, according to a Monday statement from the Beaumont Police Department.
The Riverside County Coroner’s Office alerted the police on April 26 about the death of a 15-month-old infant who had suffered a head injury while in Greenman’s care. At that point, the investigation into Greenman’s activities got under way.
The child had reportedly collapsed while running and was transported right away to a local hospital because of swelling and bleeding in the head, according to a police news statement. Tragically, the kid died from the wounds in the hospital. Officers found a second victim, a 2-year-old kid, who had sustained “several serious injuries” while under Greenman’s care during this inquiry. These wounds had not previously been documented.
The second victim and the link to Greenman were found when the police launched a thorough investigation and obtained numerous search warrants. She was initially charged with child abuse and maltreatment that resulted in death.
But afterwards, first-degree murder was added to the charges following a review by the district attorney’s office. The Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility is where Greenman is now being held after being arrested. Records from the jail indicate that her subsequent court date is set for August 17. Her relatives could not be reached for comment, and Greenman’s lawyer has thus far declined to make any remarks.
Authorities believe there may be more victims who had been under Greenman’s care, which is a worrying development.
The Detective Sergeant can be reached at 951-769-8500, and the Beaumont Police Department is pleading with anyone with knowledge about this case to come forward. Investigators are unsure if there are further victims, but Marcedes Cashmer, a Beaumont police spokesperson, stated that the possibility cannot be ruled out.
For a considerable amount of time, Greenman is said to have advertised for babysitting services on local Facebook groups, which raises questions about the volume of her connections with youngsters.
When entrusting the care of children to others, it is crucial to exercise caution and do extensive background checks. When choosing a babysitter, parents and guardians should use prudence and due diligence, properly screening potential applicants, and checking references. It also serves as a reminder of the critical part that law enforcement agencies play in looking into child abuse cases and making sure the victims get justice.
Authorities will be aggressively searching for any new information and possible victims as the investigation progresses. It is hoped that anyone with information on similar instances can assist law authorities in their investigation, helping to bring those responsible to justice and stop further harm.
