A 29-year-old woman from South Korea has been accused of enrolling in a New Jersey high school using false documents. She is facing charges of providing a false government document and pleaded not guilty in court recently.
According to her lawyer, the woman enrolled in New Brunswick High School in January, not with any malicious intentions, but because she was lonely and longed to return to her days with friends in school.
The lawyer said that his client came to the United States by herself when she was 16 to attend a private boarding school. After that, she graduated from Rutgers University in 2019.
The woman’s lawyer stated that she had no nefarious intentions when she enrolled in the high school. Instead, she was seeking to return to “a place of safety and welcoming and an environment that she looks back on fondly.”
Unfortunately, the woman provided district officials with a false birth certificate when she enrolled, which is why she is facing the charges.
The woman was only at the high school for four days, during which she attended some classes. Authorities have said that she got the phone numbers of students who helped her find her way through the school and continued to text some of them days after her ruse was discovered.
However, after the school district found out that she had used false documents to enroll, she was barred from entering school grounds, and officials advised students to not have any contact with her.
The district has nearly 10,000 students, and this incident highlights the importance of school officials being vigilant about who enrolls in their schools. While this woman’s intentions were not malicious, it is still important to ensure that all students in a school are who they say they are.
The woman has applied to enter a pretrial intervention program, which could lead to the charges being dismissed. She is due back in court in May, and it remains to be seen what the outcome of the case will be.
In conclusion, this is a unique case that highlights the loneliness that some people can experience and how it can lead to unusual actions.
While the woman’s actions were not necessarily harmful, they were still illegal, and it is important for all students to enroll in school using truthful documents.
