grandmother who was shot by her grandson before he killed 21 people at a Texas elementary school has been released from University Health Hospital in San Antonio. As previously reported, the 66-year-old woman is the grandmother of the shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.

She was the first victim that day. She was shot in the face at her home before Ramos drove to Robb Elementary School and killed 21 people. A bullet pierced her jaw and upper cheek and she required significant reconstructive surgery.

Ramos’ grandmother “did everything for him,” a family member stated, including cooking and picking him up from late work shifts at a fast-food restaurant, and no one understands why the 18-year-old would lash out at her.

The only remaining patient from the shooting, a 10-year-old girl, has been upgraded to good condition, the hospital system tweeted Tuesday.
