At around 11:32 am on May 24, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, who lived in Uvalde, Texas, opened fire in Robb Elementary School just two days before students were due to start their summer vacation.

After arguing with his grandmother, with whom he had been living, he shot her with an AR-15 assault rifle that he legally purchased, drove to Robb Elementary School, and carried out a gruesome shooting that killed 21 people — 19 children, and two teachers.

The news describes Ramos as a “lone gunman,” but that’s far from the truth.

Men like Ramos are propped up by politicians who have spent the decades since the Columbine High School massacre failing to protect other children.

The United States has an issue that has been ignored by Republicans for far too long, and the issue is gun control.

Gun control is something that has repeatedly been refused in the United States but has been proven to work in other nations all around the world.

It could have prevented the deaths of those 21 people at Robb Elementary School, and the many other lives lost in mass shootings.

Politicians that refuse to vote for gun reform are to blame.

Unfortunately, the USA’s political system operates under a bipartisan system under which we have been conditioned to loathe each other which such intensity that either side will blindly disagree with whatever the opposition believes while the people of the United States die in the crossfire, literally.

According to various polls conducted by legitimate and reliable research organizations, a whopping 90% of people in the country want universal background checks on gun purchases — the bare minimum of gun control that our country lacks.

Yet, the push for gun control has become a shout into a void in Congress.

Politicians were voted into office to reflect the values of the citizens who elected them but in America none of this matters. Instead, opposition has become a bigger priority than unity.

There are many ways to prevent school shootings but gun control is the most imperative issue to address.

“This is a mental health issue,” screams the collective hive mind of the right, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Abbott is the father of one daughter.

If that were the case, then the likely resolution is to aid the funding of mental health programs, expand them, and make them more accessible and affordable to the people who need them, right?

Yet, in April, Governor Abbott cut $211 million in funding from the department that would oversee such programs.

Even then, had Abbott allowed these programs to receive funding, it would still be possible for someone accessing mental health treatment to purchase a firearm and shoot up a school.

“Spare me the bulls— about mental illness. We don’t have any more mental illness than any other country in the world,” said Senator Chris Murphy when addressing his fellow senators after the shooting.

“You cannot explain this through a prism of mental illness because we don’t – we’re not an outlier on mental illness.”

Murphy is a father of two children.

Even if it were true that the United States had, by some anomaly, the most mentally unstable people on the planet, that’s an even bigger reason to put these murder weapons out of their reach.

It’s not propaganda, as the Texas senator who has received $176,000 in donations from the NRA, Senator Ted Cruz, would have you believe.

The issue isn’t political. What is political about the deaths of children?

It’s not mental health, it’s not violent video games, and it’s not that there aren’t enough guns.

The answer isn’t arming teachers, training kids, bullet-proof backpacks, or pleading to God to root out evil.

Thoughts and prayers will not prevent school shootings.

“Gun control laws do work, by the way,” talk show host Jimmy Kimmel announced in his statement regarding the Uvalde shooting, referring back to the Dunblane school shooting in Scotland in 1996 that prompted the government to pass gun control laws.

There hasn’t been a school shooting in Scotland since.

“These are our children, and our representatives are supposed to represent us,” Kimmel says, shouting much of the same anger and disgust with the politicians who would much rather stand by and watch children be murdered than do something.

Kimmel is a father of four children, two of which are of elementary school age.

“There’s 50 senators, right now, that refuse to vote on H.R. 8, which is a background check rule,” said Golden State Warrior’s head coach Steve Kerr. “50 senators are going to hold us hostage.”

Kerr is a father of three children.

Our politicians would rather stand by, unaffected, while hundreds of millions of Americans beg for their children’s lives.

They would rather fill their pockets with money than pay a penny to save a child.

They would rather force you to have children than protect them when they’re out in the world.

  1. It isn’t gun control. It’s a teachers inability to protect her students and herself. Give the good guys a gun so they can fight back! If we take away guns from the general population only criminals will have them. Schools can be made safer pretty easily. Bullet proof doors with locks would help. Sad that we even have to think like this.

  2. It s not the guns it s the people behind the guns who pull the trigger and kill. .Like in Chicago that kill every weekend.

  3. Seems like when someone puts their opinion here in comments that someone doesn’t want seen or is against the agenda this page can’t be reached.

    1. I still would like to know how he was financed to buy two expensive rifles and ammo. The info out on him doesn’t sound like he was self supporting.

  4. Wrong. Not gun control We call it criminal control. Bad guys should be incarcerated for a long time. Especially murders’s and attempted murders’s. Bad guys get to go free and cause more people hurt than any gun would. Guns are a tool they use to do bodily harm with. A shovel can do the same thing. Take away the bad guys and what have you got. Think about it.

  5. What a biased left leaning take!! First of all no one can force a mentally ill person to admit they are ill and if they do to go get treatment. Second you can’t take away the rights of the majority because of a few. There are strict gun control laws in Chicago and New York City but that doesn’t stop the criminals from getting guns. Third even if guns were banned if someone wanted to kill a bunch of people they would find a different way. For example a car like in Waukesha. A knife attack in tge UK and in Japan or China where a knife attack left a bunch of people stabbed in seconds. Suicide bombers anyone? If someone has evil intentions nothing like ink on paper will stop them.
I totally agree with stronger vetting and requirements for gun purchases.
What happened in Uvalde is tragic and should never have taken place but blaming the right and Republicans is not the solution. Each individual is in charge of their own actions.
Also the school let it’s guard down. Why were the doors open? Why was he able to walk right in? Knowing that anything could happen at anytime the school should not have been so careless in their security.
There’s plenty of blame to go around. Making this a one sided political story is pathetic.

  6. Mental health IS a “serious issue”, in this country; I cannot speak for other countries. The recent pandemic lockdowns/restrictions/mandates, etc., exacerbated and brought out the worst in a lot of people. The effect violent video games, movies, etc., has on young peoples’ minds IS a factor as are the “mind altering drugs” some mental health patients are prescribed by their own doctors and psychiatrists. Let me just reiterate a “proven fact” – -GUN CONTROL LAWS DO NOT WORK, “gun free zones” DO NOT WORK- – the crooks and psychos will “always” be able to acquire guns and they WILL continue to use them. The “most effective” way to ensure the safety of our children and the public, in general, is for school districts to employ “professional security” personnel AND train and arm their teachers and administrators!! Retail establishments, public gathering places and malls should follow the same procedure.

  7. Why did this shooter get in the school, the doors should lock and anyone wanting in needs to go through the office then they know who is in the school. Don’t blame everyone who owns a fire arm. Most of us take very good care of them. Why has the media not mention that this person was Mexican, and the kids he killed also were. It doe’s not matter it should never happen but when the person is white they scream and tell the whole world. I notice most of the parents did not speak English, that did not help either. If a person is old enough to go in the military and get his but shot off so we can all sit here on our ass bitching how bad it is he is old enough to buy a gun. People has got to help, when someone starts talking trash tell someone. Call 911 and ask them, do something. Have safety classes.

  8. This writer is an IDIOT! Do they ever think things through? Guns don’t kill people stupid – people do. AND if someone wants to kill they don’t have to have a gun!!! Other nations? Oh I bet you mean New Zealand? Seems like there was a horrific shooting there. So how would we protect ourselves if all our options are gone. Criminals can get guns easier than people can get them legally anyway. Stop being a democrap and blaming everyone else. You don’t like it here? LEAVE!!!! Go to one of those countries you claim don’t have gun violence!!!

  9. The One big thing you forget , With our Government you start with one item on gun control and they just keep adding more. Then you say these kids are not Mentally ill. Well a dont know alot of kids that just go around shooting up in schools. Their has to be so mental problems. And you never say anything about the people who know about someone who has said or put on Facebook things they where about to do with a gun. If you hear or read something that a kid has said he is going to shoot people. That person should call the Police and tell them. Many of school shootings where done when the person has posted it on line, or told a friend. But nobody comes forward and calls the police. What about these kids that are Bullied and turn there anger to using guns. The Big problem is not the gun, guns do not go off by themselves.

  10. this is all programed by what the kids learn on tv, games on phones, schools and what they see our politicians doing….do what i say not as i do….they see the hypocrisy of the left and some on the right, they see the lack of justice for wrongdoing, they see the favoritism of religions and the diversity being caused by our current government…if school areas weren’t gun free zones you wouldn’t see this happening cause they would be afraid to carry out such heinous acts….if they had a real education of real learning and not CORE OR WOKE subjects they might not be so frustrated and disturbed ….they might actually learn how to read, write and do math the correct way…..how many have not even passed basic course that we had 50 years ago and learned how to share opposing views in civil ways this wouldn’t be happening either…look how bad our own congress and senate behaves…there are not many grown ups in the world anymore just demanding children…this violent behavior is pushed and supported by our liberal government…it needs to change and the sooner the better

  12. Yup, let’s pass total gun control – then all law-abiding citizens will lose their Second Amendment rights and only criminals will have weapons. Oh wait, the Left (Marxists) believe all criminals will follow the law. How could I be so stupid?
We protect valuables in banks with alarms and guards; are their no “valuables” in schools? Harden the schools and allow staff to be armed.
    Impeach 46

  13. Seems this site doesn’t want comments disagreeing with their editorial spin. Use to enjoy reading it, but never again…

  14. We The People know Damn well who to BLAME ! IT’S not the Republicans that has caused this Insane Killing of 19 Children 2 Adult Teachers and Injured 17 others China Joe and the Parasites that are this FAKE ADMINISTRATION is the Ones that should take the Brunt of the Crimes.
The Deranged and DEPLORABLE’S of the Democratic Socialist/Communist Party Members wouldn’t work with the Republicans on a Bill to would have Prevented it from Happening. The Problem here is that the Democratic Party Members Wouldn’t and Will not work beside the Republicans on any Bills that they Present to Congress PERIOD ! None of this would have never ever Happened.

  15. Chicago, IL is one of the strictest gun law cities, if not the strictest, in the US and how has that worked out for that city? One weekend last month there were over 38 shootings. It is a weekly problem there.

  16. Propped up by politicians? You socialists bastards want to blame everyone but the society that produces these losers who turn to violence. Someone propped open a locked door. Someone wasn’t on duty in that school building. Someone didn’t report the kids bad behavior. Some didn’t challenge the kid before he entered the building. A mother didn’t seek help a father didn’t seek help for his troubled kid. The kids friends did not report his behavior knowing he had bought guns and ammo.

  17. Are you stupid?! There already are background checks. And guess what?! This monster passed the FBI background check. It’s not that we don’t have laws on the books. It’s that the laws meant to protect us aren’t being used. And to sit there and blame republicans for the deaths of these children when for the last two years all the Democrats and crazy liberals have been screaming defund the police and take police out of our schools is just disgusting! FYI- the shooter got into school because of an unlocked door propped open by a teacher. How about them apples. But know instead of actually being a journalist for truth you just spread lies for the Democrats. Shame on you!!!!!!

  18. This article is in the WRONG here…A longer wait time and a multi-level background check (a background check done by local law enforcement and another one done at a higher level to check for discrepancies in both checks) would be a first step. The Democrats have had their chance in the past with the Sandy Hook shooting among others to do something but THEY failed to do so. If this idiot hadn’t used a gun but something else, then we would have to start banning EVERYTHING that could be used as a weapon (bricks, lumber, baseball bats, etc). Hell, even a person could be considered as a weapon due to the fact we can choke a person with our hands, head butt someone so hard to really hurt another, even “kill” with our words. Main thing to remember: IF A PERSON WANTS TO KILL SOMEONE, THEY WILL FIND SOMETHING *ANYTHING* TO KILL ANOTHER PERSON WITH. So I guess we need to ban OURSELVES then…

  19. Okay you take guns away from honest citizens the only ones with guns will be criminals that. Buy there guns on the black market That’s what needs to be stopped. If they ever try to take my guns then I’ll be and outlaw because I will protect my family and property anyway I can. The government is out to disarm us so they can control us Think about that.

  20. Too many ‘wrong’ decisions were made in the Uvalde, TX school shooting horror. That fact raising many questions as far as government ‘involvement’ is concerned. If another individual (s) ? was involved in the massacre ; the investigations must move at ‘full speed ahead’ and all evidence be publicized. All procedures by any/all police procedures must be considered for REVIEW/CHANGE. The people who push for: GUN CONTROL are far off base. The ‘real’ reason has NOT been brought forward to make significant OVER-HAUL of this tragic system in the USA.

  21. This is a Cop out by the Deranged and Deplorable DemoRats of the Democratic Socialist/Communist Party. The DemoRats have been against Gun Control and what to Blame it all on the Republican Party that has put forth at least 20 sum Bills to Control Gun Violence.
And every time the Republican Party put forth a Bill it’s been Blocked the One and Only Charles Schumer and Adam Schiff. And there are Many other Parasites in this FAKE Pretending President Joey O’Biden Administration. Oop ! We forgot to enter the name of Dick Durbin in the mix.
