A convicted murderer who survived a “botched” execution has died of natural causes after he endured “two hours of torture” four years ago.
Doyle Lee Hamm died of complications from lymphoma on Sunday, his attorney confirmed, reported the Daily Star.
The 64-year-old had been on death row since 1987 after being convicted of murdering Patrick Cunningham, who he shot at a motel in Cullman, Alabama, during an armed robbery.
He admitted his crime to police and was later convicted when his two accomplices testified against him in exchange for a plea bargain that saw them receive lesser offences.

He was repeatedly stabbed with a needle in his groin, ankles, and lower legs as doctors attempted and failed to find a usable vein for his lethal injection in the execution.
According to The Sun, Hamm’s veins were likely difficult to locate because of his intravenous drug use and diagnosis with an “extremely aggressive lymphoma”.
Alabama Department of Corrections officials said they had simply run out of time to complete the execution. The procedure began after 9pm and it was shortly before midnight that it was finally called off.
His brother claimed afterwards, Hamm said it was excruciating to endure after several failures to find a vein to carry out the procedure.
He suffered bruises and swelling in several parts of his body, with photos showing the areas doctors tried to inject the needle.
His attorney Bernard Harcourt had argued for months before the execution that it should not be carried out due to his ailments.
Reflecting on earlier pleas for clemency after the botched incident, he wrote of the execution: “The result was an agonizing, torturous botched execution that left him on the gurney for two-and-a-half hours as they picked and prodded at his legs and groin, trying to find a vein.
“It was unconscionable.”
His legal team and the state of Alabama later reached a settlement that agreed to not set any more execution dates for him on the condition that Hamm did not pursue any legal cases against the state.
Harcourt said at the time: “This is a great relief to Doyle Hamm,”
“It comes after lengthy, fruitful discussions with the Alabama Attorney General’s office.”
In a statement released after his death, Harcourt said he would miss Hamm’s “generous, giving spirit and positive attitude”.
Hamm was then sentenced to life in prison instead and remained behind bars until his death.
He is survived by his daughter and brother.

He didn’t care how the people felt when he was killing them. As far as I’m concerned they should not have stopped Let him feel the pain that he caused on innocent people
That’s so true I bet the victim suffered from their wounds before they died also
So we are suppose to feel sorry for some murderous scumbag. He was not tortured, imagine the loved ones who suffered because of his actions.
Common decency should have prevailed instead of having him lay on a gurney for 2 1/2 hour suffering while they tried to find a viable vein. I say this even though my prior husband was murdered and the criminal was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life and served 21 years. Yes, I felt and feel like the sentence was in adequate had it been life without parole I would have been satisfied. The State of Alabama should have considered the mans ailments and the fact that his veins may have been virtually non-existent.

I’m sure his victim suffered more than some needle sticks. I say bring back the electric chair or hanging and quit babying the killers.
