Hillary Clinton is sounding the alarm about what could happen if Democrats deliver a devastating Election Night defeat to President Donald Trump, warning that a politically cornered president could become even more unpredictable and combative.
Appearing on ABC’s The View on Monday, November 2, the former secretary of state offered a grim prediction about Trump’s reaction if Republicans lose control of both the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“Trump has become more and more unhinged,” Clinton said, suggesting that a major Democratic victory could push her former presidential rival into an even more confrontational posture.
Clinton predicted that Trump would feel “cornered” and “angry” and begin “lashing out” if Democrats seize control of Congress. However, she argued that such a victory would also give lawmakers greater power to investigate his administration and hold him accountable.
Her warning comes as Republicans face a potentially bruising Election Night. Democrats enter the final stretch with a substantial advantage in national congressional polling, while several competitive Senate races could determine whether Trump’s party retains its grip on Washington.
The stakes extend far beyond political bragging rights. A Democratic takeover of Congress would threaten Trump’s legislative agenda and give his opponents control of powerful committees capable of conducting investigations, issuing subpoenas and scrutinizing his administration.
Clinton has been raising increasingly dire concerns about that possibility. During an October 28 interview with journalist Kara Swisher, she predicted that Trump could start “coming apart at the seams” following a Republican defeat, warning Americans to “buckle up” for what might follow.
On The View, she also expressed concern about possible attempts to challenge election results, including efforts to delay certification in certain states. Those scenarios remain predictions rather than established plans, but Clinton suggested that election officials and legal organizations would be prepared to respond.
The former first lady also condemned the increasingly personal attacks dominating some political campaigns, singling out a controversial Ohio advertisement produced by Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign.
The advertisement featured the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton, attacking her daughter’s credibility. It sparked widespread condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike before Ramaswamy’s campaign stopped airing it last week. Trump, however, publicly defended the advertisement.
Clinton called such tactics “outside the pale of any kind of political discourse,” arguing that increasingly cruel attacks risk becoming normalized in American politics.
The White House dismissed Clinton’s latest warnings. In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, the administration defended Trump’s economic record and accused Clinton of continuing to complain about her 2016 presidential election defeat.
Despite her bleak assessment of Trump’s potential reaction, Clinton said she remains hopeful about Democrats’ chances on Tuesday.
“I’m feeling really optimistic, but I’m an optimist who worries a lot,” she acknowledged, emphasizing that her confidence would not become certainty until every vote had been fairly counted.
For Clinton, the possibility of a Democratic victory represents more than a political setback for the president who defeated her a decade ago. She sees it as an opportunity for Congress to reassert its independence, demand accountability and restore a more fact-based political debate.
But her central warning was unmistakable: Even if Democrats deliver the sweeping victory they are hoping for, Clinton believes the resulting confrontation with Trump could be just beginning.
