The disturbing death of a 29-year-old Black woman found hanging from a tree behind a vacant Mississippi home is fueling outrage, fear and mounting demands for answers as investigators remain tight-lipped about what happened.
Tasia Fortune was found dead Monday, Aug. 3, behind an abandoned residence in Jackson, Mississippi, authorities confirmed. Her body may have been at the location for several days before the grim discovery was made.
Now, as Fortune’s family mourns and an autopsy remains pending, local leaders are pressing authorities to determine exactly how the young woman died — and whether anyone else was involved.
The circumstances have attracted particular scrutiny in Mississippi, a state whose brutal history of racial violence and lynchings has made the discovery especially unsettling for some residents.
But authorities have not announced evidence that Fortune was murdered, targeted because of her race or died by suicide.
Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard said Fortune’s body was transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, which is expected to determine both the cause and manner of her death.
The Jackson Police Department said investigators were working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police have so far released few details explaining how Fortune ended up behind the vacant home, and officials have not publicly said whether they suspect foul play.
That silence has done little to calm growing concern.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has reportedly asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office to assist with the investigation as questions surrounding Fortune’s death spread well beyond the city.
“Surely, somebody should say something,” Stokes said.
For many residents, the imagery surrounding the case carries an especially painful weight.
Mississippi has one of the darkest histories of lynching and racial terrorism in the United States, and the discovery of a Black woman hanging from a tree has inevitably reopened old wounds.
That history, however, is not evidence of what happened to Fortune, and investigators have not announced any racial motive or criminal involvement.
Still, the case comes amid broader concerns from Black families who have previously challenged official suicide determinations in hanging deaths and demanded more exhaustive investigations.
Fortune’s loved ones are now seeking those same answers.
A fundraiser established to help her family cover funeral expenses remembered Fortune as a vibrant young woman whose sudden death has devastated those closest to her.
She was described as a “strong-minded, big-hearted, vibrant young woman” whose life ended at only 29 years old.
“Her loss has deeply shaken everyone who knew and loved her,” fundraiser organizer Etta Avolio wrote.
The family, according to the fundraiser, is leaning heavily on its faith as relatives prepare to bury Fortune and wait for investigators to explain what happened.
“The family also wants others to know that justice will be served,” Avolio wrote.
As of Saturday, Aug. 8, authorities had not publicly announced a definitive cause or manner of death, and the investigation remained active. Recent local reporting similarly indicated that police had not disclosed evidence explaining how Fortune came to be hanging from the tree.
Until the autopsy and investigation provide those answers, Fortune’s death is likely to remain under intense scrutiny.
