Trump Portrait Painted With Horse Manure Sells Almost Instantly for $1,800

A bizarre portrait of President Donald Trump created with a mixture of horse manure and water sold almost immediately after going on display at a Canadian art show.

Vancouver Island artist Wendy Chartrand’s controversial painting, titled “The Don of Dung,” was purchased for $1,800 on the opening day of the Sooke Fine Arts Show.

Before the exhibition, Chartrand celebrated the painting’s acceptance in an Instagram post and made no attempt to hide the unusual material she used to create it.

“The medium is the message here. I’ve made the paint from horse s—,” she wrote.

Chartrand told CTV News she had “no idea” who bought the Trump portrait but said she would like to identify the buyer so she could personally thank them.

The artist also admitted she was stunned by how quickly someone was willing to pay nearly $2,000 for the manure-based political statement.

“I’m amazed,” Chartrand said.

She described the painting as an attempt to find humor in political events that people may feel powerless to change.

“It’s just good to laugh at stuff sometimes,” she said during the show’s opening. “You can’t do anything about it often, so you might as well laugh.”

The provocative artwork was accepted into the Sooke Fine Arts Show despite its unmistakably anti-Trump message and unconventional materials.

Jen Hayward, the exhibition’s executive director, defended the decision to include the piece, arguing that the show has a long history of displaying art connected to controversial political and social issues.

“The Sooke Fine Arts Show has celebrated artistic excellence for 40 years, and we’ve had many provocative pieces that reflected the social and political events of their time,” Hayward said.

Whether viewed as clever political satire or another example of the art world’s obsession with attacking Trump, “The Don of Dung” clearly found an audience — and a buyer — almost as soon as it was unveiled.
