Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. erupted during a tense CNN interview Sunday, repeatedly interrupting host Dana Bash, accusing the media of “malpractice” and calling her a “parrot” during a chaotic confrontation over vaccines, COVID-19 and America’s readiness for another pandemic.
The fiery exchange unfolded on CNN’s State of the Union after Bash asked Kennedy what the Trump administration was doing to prepare for the next major public health emergency.
Instead of outlining a clear pandemic response plan, Kennedy launched into a lengthy argument about constitutional rights he claimed were stripped away during COVID-era lockdowns.
“Forgive me, but you’re just talking about rights, and I’m asking about a potential public health crisis that is coming,” Bash said as she attempted to steer the discussion back to pandemic preparedness.
“I really want to move on,” she added after Kennedy repeatedly talked over her.
That appeared to send the 72-year-old HHS secretary over the edge.
“Of course you do, because you were part of the problem!” Kennedy snapped, pointing directly at Bash.
“No, I wasn’t part of the problem,” the veteran CNN journalist replied.
Kennedy refused to back down.
“Yes! There was absolute press malpractice,” he charged. “Your job is fierce skepticism toward authority. And you weren’t doing that. You were beating up the people who were dissenting.”
The interview quickly descended into a shouting match, with both participants speaking over each other as Bash tried to regain control.
“Do you want to sit here and attack me, or do you want to have a conversation about public health?” she asked.
“You’re sitting here attacking me!” Kennedy fired back.
“I’m not attacking you,” Bash responded. “I’m asking questions about how to prevent the next pandemic.”
“Well, ask a question and I’ll tell you,” Kennedy said.
“That’s what I’m trying to do,” Bash replied. “But I also don’t want to use this interview to allow you to say things that aren’t entirely true.”
The bitter back-and-forth continued for roughly 15 minutes as Kennedy repeatedly accused Bash and the media of failing the public during the pandemic.
Tensions exploded again when the conversation shifted to measles, vaccines and Kennedy’s long history of promoting disputed claims about a connection between vaccines and autism.
Kennedy accused Bash of rolling her eyes at him while he defended his position.
“Do you want people to get the MMR vaccine?” Bash asked.
“Yeah, I said that already,” Kennedy replied with a smirk. He then pointed at her and added, “I know you’re flustered now, and it’s frustrating.”
Bash immediately pushed back.
“I’m not flustered at all. I am frustrated,” she said. “The reason I’m frustrated is because you are the HHS secretary and you are talking about things that lead to vaccine hesitancy in this country.”
Before she could finish, Kennedy interrupted again.
“Let me ask you something,” he said. “Do you see your job as ending vaccine hesitancy, or do you see your job as telling the truth to the American people?”
“I see my job as telling the truth,” Bash replied, pointing to the large body of scientific research surrounding vaccines.
Kennedy then leaned forward across the table and unleashed one of his most personal attacks of the interview.
“You’re repeating it like a parrot,” he snarled. “You’re repeating it like a parrot. I’ve actually read the science.”
The interview once again dissolved into overlapping voices and raised tempers.
“I’m not debating nonsense,” Bash declared.
Kennedy, visibly angry and gesturing wildly, accused her of blindly repeating what experts told her and blamed public trust in former White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci for failures in the country’s health system.
After Kennedy claimed Bash had “no personal knowledge” of the issue, she fired back: “Okay, well, guess what? That is my job, to talk to people.”
“Your job is to tell the truth!” Kennedy shouted.
“Am I allowed to talk?” Bash demanded.
The remarkable confrontation offered a striking glimpse of the turmoil surrounding Kennedy’s leadership of the nation’s top health agency. Rather than calmly explaining how the administration plans to protect Americans from the next outbreak, the HHS secretary spent much of the nationally televised interview attacking the press, relitigating pandemic-era grievances and battling the journalist asking him basic public health questions.
