The Obama Foundation has unveiled the first official portrait of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama together.

The massive new artwork was revealed Monday and will be displayed at the Obama Presidential Center.

Internationally known artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby created the portrait by blending images from the Obamas’ family albums with historic moments captured by the media.

The result is a large 9-by-10-foot piece filled with personal and public memories from the couple’s life together.

Crosby used acrylic paint, colored pencils, charcoal and transfers on paper to create the portrait.

When Barack and Michelle Obama saw the finished piece for the first time, Michelle had an emotional reaction.

“It’s us!” she said. “And it’s all of the stories within the story.”

Barack kept things light, joking with the artist about one detail in the portrait.

“The real question is how come you didn’t dye my hair in the photo,” he joked.

Visitors will be able to see the painting inside the Obama Presidential Center, where it will hang in the museum’s Hope and Change lobby.

The space will be open to the public and will not require a ticket, giving visitors a chance to see the historic portrait up close.
