Another scandal is rocking Capitol Hill — and this one reads more like a political soap opera than a congressional ethics complaint.
North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards is facing explosive new allegations involving a much younger female staffer, including emotional poetry readings, handwritten love notes, casino getaways and flowers allegedly waiting in her hotel room during a Las Vegas trip.
The 65-year-old married Republican has strongly denied wrongdoing, dismissing earlier accusations as “horses—,” but a new report from Axios paints an increasingly awkward and deeply personal picture of life inside his congressional office.
According to the report, Edwards allegedly became emotional while reading a poem he wrote for the staffer during her going-away party — even choking back tears as a slideshow featuring photos of the two played in front of the entire office.
Sources told Axios the moment stunned staffers because Edwards reportedly never wrote poetry or organized elaborate sendoffs for other employees.
And that was just the beginning.
The report claims Edwards later sent the woman a three-page handwritten letter saying she had “written a complex chapter in my heart,” while also texting her about missing the time they spent together.
“It’s disappointing to feel something that used to be easy has gotten complicated,” Edwards allegedly wrote after the staffer reportedly declined a dinner invitation because she feared office rumors.
Axios says it reviewed text messages, handwritten notes and photos connected to the allegations, though PEOPLE noted it has not independently verified the claims.
The accusations come at a brutal time for Republicans already battling a string of ethics scandals and misconduct investigations in Congress.
Edwards, who has been married to his wife Teresa since 1980, has publicly insisted he never had an inappropriate relationship with any staff member and says political enemies are trying to destroy him.
“I welcome any investigation,” he previously told PEOPLE, blaming the controversy on the toxic political climate and accusing unnamed opponents of spreading false allegations to create headlines.
But the latest claims are raising even more eyebrows.
According to Axios, Edwards allegedly pressured the staffer to take shots of liquor during outings and took trips with her to casinos, including MGM National Harbor in Maryland and the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Three sources told the outlet that flowers were allegedly arranged in the staffer’s hotel room when she arrived at the Bellagio in late 2025.
In one alleged text message, Edwards reportedly reminisced about their conversations and casino winnings, writing: “Whether we were talking about cat poop, crime plots or thoughts more meaningful — I’ve always valued the time we shared and the money we won :)”
The report also claims Edwards once left Capitol Hill during the workday to visit the staffer in the hospital after she suffered appendicitis.
One handwritten note allegedly reviewed by Axios read: “From hospital visits to helping with your chores to sharing personal stories, I was always deeply moved that you trusted me with this openness.”
At least one staffer reportedly complained internally about Edwards’ behavior and comments about appearance, fearing possible retaliation.
So far, Edwards has not directly addressed the newest allegations publicly.
Speaking to CNN earlier this week, the congressman insisted the rumors would eventually collapse under scrutiny.
“I think you’re gonna find that when Ethics completes their investigation that the facts will have caught up with all the gossip and the rumor,” he said.
The House Ethics Committee has refused to comment on whether a formal investigation is underway, though congressional ethics probes have already helped trigger several high-profile resignations this year involving both Republicans and Democrats accused of misconduct.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has not publicly commented on the accusations surrounding Edwards.
The allegations also arrive as lawmakers from both parties face mounting public anger over misconduct scandals, insider culture and abuse-of-power accusations inside Congress.
Whether the claims against Edwards lead to formal consequences remains unclear — but the bizarre details involving poems, tears, casinos and handwritten heart notes have already turned the controversy into one of the most talked-about political scandals on Capitol Hill this week.
