Vice President J. D. Vance is trying to laugh off growing speculation about who will inherit President Donald Trump’s political movement in 2028 — but the bizarre scene that unfolded at the White House this week already had critics comparing it to a reality TV audition.
During a gathering at the White House Rose Garden Club earlier this week, Trump stunned attendees when he suddenly turned the event into what looked like an impromptu Republican primary poll, asking the crowd to cheer for who they wanted as his successor: Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Who’s it going to be? Is it going to be J.D.? Is it going to be somebody else?” Trump asked the crowd. “Who likes J.D. Vance?”
Supporters erupted in applause before Trump shifted gears and asked the audience the same question about Rubio. While Rubio also received cheers, attendees reportedly responded louder for Vance, prompting Trump to joke that the two could form a “dream team” ticket.
The moment immediately fueled fresh questions about whether Trump — who remains the dominant force in Republican politics heading into his second term — is already informally testing the waters for his political heir.
And critics wasted no time mocking the spectacle as something closer to NBC’s The Apprentice than a traditional presidential succession conversation.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Vance attempted to downplay the increasingly awkward comparisons between Trump-world politics and reality television.
“Well, I just don’t think it sounds like the president of the United States to have a televised competition for who would succeed him as his apprentice,” Vance said while laughing. “I just think that’s not at all what you would expect the president to do.”
Still, the vice president acknowledged Trump enjoys stirring the pot politically and keeping allies guessing.
“I think the president, he’s always been fascinated by politics,” Vance explained. “He was fascinated by politics 30 years before he ever ran for office.”
Vance added that Trump was likely “joking around” and “playing with the idea,” insisting the administration remains focused on governing rather than future campaigns.
But the timing of the comments has only intensified speculation surrounding the future of Trump’s political dynasty — especially after reports surfaced that Amazon’s Prime Video has discussed rebooting Trump’s old reality TV franchise, The Apprentice.
According to reports, executives have floated the possibility of Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., stepping into the host role once made famous by his father’s signature catchphrase: “You’re fired.”
The original Apprentice helped transform Trump from a New York real estate mogul into a national celebrity powerhouse years before his political rise, blurring the lines between entertainment and politics in ways critics argue still shape American culture today.
After rumors exploded online about Don Jr. potentially leading a reboot, Amazon attempted to cool the speculation with a carefully worded statement.
“Since our acquisition of MGM, we have had preliminary internal discussions about what’s next for The Apprentice as a property,” a spokesperson said. “Any reporting on details of the show or names of potential hosts would be purely speculative.”
Trump himself appeared less than fully committed to the idea when asked whether his son had what it takes to carry the franchise.
“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said. “He’d be probably good. He’s got a little charisma going. You need a little charisma for that sucker.”
Even so, Democrats and Trump critics have increasingly argued that the former reality TV star continues to treat politics like a televised competition built around personalities, loyalty tests, and crowd reactions — a style supporters love but opponents say trivializes the presidency.
Now, with Vance and Rubio both emerging as possible faces of the post-Trump Republican Party, even Trump’s off-the-cuff jokes are being dissected like campaign strategy — and turning White House appearances into must-watch political theater.
