A horrifying mystery in India is leaving investigators scrambling for answers after an entire family of four died shortly after eating watermelon contaminated with rat poison.

The shocking case — now being called the “watermelon deaths” across India — has sparked fear, panic and even a drop in fruit sales in parts of Mumbai as police try to figure out whether the tragedy was a terrible accident, a murder plot or something even darker.

According to reports, Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their two daughters, Ayesha and Zainab, were found dead inside their home in Mumbai’s crowded Pydhonie neighborhood on April 25.

Investigators say the family had spent the evening hosting relatives for dinner, serving biryani before their guests left around 10:30 p.m. But just hours later, the family reportedly cut into a watermelon for a late-night snack — and everything suddenly took a deadly turn.

Police say the family quickly became violently ill, suffering vomiting and severe diarrhea shortly after eating the fruit. They were rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to JJ Hospital, but doctors were unable to save them.

As rumors spread across the city, investigators launched an urgent probe into what caused the sudden deaths.

Now, forensic experts say they discovered zinc phosphide — a highly toxic chemical commonly used in rat poison — inside the victims’ organs and in samples of the watermelon recovered from the home.

Dr. Vijay Thakare, director of the Forensic Science Laboratory, said the poison was detected in the victims’ liver, kidney and spleen tissues, along with stomach contents and other internal samples.

Police also confirmed the toxic chemical was found only in the watermelon and not in any of the other food items collected from the family’s home.

That revelation has only deepened the mystery.

Authorities say they still have no idea how the poison ended up inside the fruit.

“We are still collecting evidence and looking at all angles for motives,” one senior police officer reportedly said. “We have not ruled out homicide, accidental death or suicide.”

The bizarre case has terrified local residents because the apartment building where the family lived reportedly had a major rat problem. Many residents in the area regularly used rat poison, glue traps and chemical repellents to control infestations.

Medical experts warn zinc phosphide can kill with terrifying speed.

Mumbai physician Dr. Bhushan Rokade described the substance as “extremely toxic,” explaining that when it enters the body it releases phosphine gas, which stops cells from properly using oxygen and rapidly destroys multiple organs.

Even tiny amounts can reportedly be fatal.

Police have already questioned relatives, neighbors and coworkers, but weeks later investigators still cannot say whether the family knowingly consumed the poison, whether it was accidental contamination or whether someone deliberately tampered with the watermelon before the deadly meal.

For now, the “watermelon deaths” remain one of the most disturbing unsolved mysteries to rock India this year.
