The investigation into the terrifying disappearance of Nancy Guthrie just took a major twist — and it could finally crack the case wide open.

Sources tell ABC News the FBI is now analyzing potentially crucial DNA evidence recovered from the Tucson, Arizona home of the 84-year-old — the mother of “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie — who vanished without a trace in the early morning hours of February 1.

The sample, described as complex and involving more than one person, had been sitting in limbo for weeks after being collected shortly after the suspected abduction. Now, it’s in the hands of federal investigators using advanced forensic technology in a last-ditch push for answers.

An FBI official confirmed the agency recently received a hair sample tied to the case, though they pushed back on claims it’s “new” evidence. Instead, officials say the material was requested months ago and has only now made its way through a private Florida lab into FBI custody.

Behind the scenes, the case appears far from cold. Multiple labs across the country — possibly as many as five — are reportedly working to untangle the DNA mixture, a painstaking process that could take up to six months, according to local authorities.

Meanwhile, investigators with both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continue to chase leads. Surveillance images previously released — including a haunting doorbell camera capture and a mysterious figure spotted near the home — have so far failed to generate a breakthrough.

The emotional toll on the family has been devastating. In a tearful public plea, Savannah Guthrie revealed the crushing guilt she’s been carrying since her mother vanished.

“I’m so sorry, Mommy,” she said through tears in a recent interview, adding that the family still has no answers. “We don’t know anything… and we cannot be at peace.”

As the clock ticks and hope hangs in the balance, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward — because somewhere in that tangled DNA could be the key to solving one of the most haunting abduction cases in recent memory.
