Hillary Clinton is turning up the heat on Donald Trump, accusing him of trying to shape his presidency in the image of Vladimir Putin while warning that his actions in Iran are pushing the United States deeper into dangerous territory.

During an appearance on Morning Joe on Monday, April 13, the former secretary of state drew a direct line between Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Clinton argued that Orbán’s recent election loss after 16 years in power should serve as a warning to Americans about what can happen when one leader gains too much control.

Clinton described what she called an “unholy alliance” between autocrats and would-be autocrats, saying Orbán transformed from an anti-communist student leader into someone who now serves Putin’s interests. She pointed to what she said was Orbán’s record of tightening his grip on government, weakening the free press, and taking over universities, adding that voters in Hungary ultimately showed there is a limit to what people will accept.

She then turned her attention to Trump, saying some of Orbán’s actions should sound familiar to Americans. Clinton warned that “one-man rule” leads to corruption and the breakdown of democratic institutions, and claimed the pattern is already visible in the United States.

Her sharpest criticism came when she connected Trump’s leadership style to the escalating Iran conflict. Clinton said the situation reflects the kind of “reckless adventures” that happen when leaders operate without restraint, and argued that Trump appears to be modeling himself after Putin rather than defending democratic norms.

Calling the moment a “wake-up call,” Clinton said Americans of all political stripes should be alarmed by any attempt to undermine democracy, especially as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. She added that Orbán’s defeat should remind voters that political power is never guaranteed forever and expressed hope that American voters will deliver their own verdict in upcoming elections.

Trump has faced mounting criticism over the U.S.-Israel strike on Iran, and the backlash has not only come from his usual opponents. Some former allies and right-leaning media figures have also raised concerns about the conflict and whether the administration is betraying promises to avoid foreign wars.

Megyn Kelly was among the prominent voices questioning the war, saying she did not believe American lives should be lost for another country’s interests. Around the same time, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene blasted Trump’s rhetoric on Iran, claiming he had “gone insane” after his Easter social media posts. Joe Rogan, who backed Trump in the 2024 election, also criticized the conflict, calling it “stupid” and saying many supporters now feel betrayed.

As the fallout continues, Clinton’s remarks have added even more fuel to an already explosive political fight, one that now stretches from Washington to Tehran and from Trump’s own base to some of his fiercest longtime critics.
