A once-powerful U.S. senator is now at the center of a sensational legal battle after admitting to a secret relationship with a married man who was supposed to be protecting her.

Former Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema acknowledged in newly filed court documents that she had a romantic and sexual relationship with her bodyguard, Matthew Ammel, while he was still married. The admission came as Sinema attempts to shut down a lawsuit filed by Ammel’s estranged wife, who accuses the former lawmaker of helping destroy her marriage.

Sinema, 49, made the revelation in a motion asking a North Carolina court to dismiss the case. Her legal argument hinges on geography. According to the filing, the relationship with Ammel, 39, happened entirely outside the state.

“The relationship between Ms. Sinema and Mr. Ammel occurred exclusively outside of North Carolina,” her attorneys wrote in the motion.

Sinema claims the relationship turned romantic in May 2024 during a trip to Sonoma, California. That moment came just two months after she stunned Washington by announcing she would not seek reelection to the Senate.

At the time, her political future was already crumbling. Democratic leaders had grown frustrated with her repeated breaks from party priorities, and Rep. Ruben Gallego had launched a strong campaign to challenge her in Arizona.

According to the filing, Sinema and Ammel later had intimate encounters in several locations, including Arizona, California, Washington, D.C., and New York.

But her legal team insists that none of those encounters occurred in North Carolina, where Ammel’s wife filed her lawsuit.

That distinction, Sinema argues, means the court has no authority to hear the case.

The lawsuit paints a far more dramatic picture of how the relationship allegedly began.

According to Ammel’s estranged wife, the first connection started in December 2023 when Sinema hired Ammel to act as security during a trip to Las Vegas to attend a U2 concert at the Sphere.

Ammel reportedly brought his wife along for the trip. But soon after returning home, she began noticing frequent messages between her husband and the senator.

The texts were sent through the encrypted messaging app Signal.

In the complaint, Ammel’s wife claims the exchanges “exceeded the bounds of a normal working relationship and were of romantic and lascivious natures.”

She further alleges Sinema sent Ammel provocative images, including one where the former senator appeared wrapped only in a towel.

Sinema has flatly denied sending those photos.

The complaint also claims the pair grew increasingly close during public events.

One incident allegedly took place at the Innings Festival in Tempe, Arizona, where Sinema was said to have become “handsy” with Ammel in front of others.

Another allegation claims the former senator encouraged Ammel to bring MDMA on a work trip so she could “guide him through a psychedelic experience.”

Neither Sinema nor Ammel has publicly responded to that specific accusation.

Court filings and campaign finance records reveal that the pair attended several high-profile outings together during the period in question.

Among them was a Taylor Swift concert in California. Records show Sinema later spent $1,610 at the singer’s official merchandise store, listing the purchase as “gifts.”

She also spent nearly $573 at Three Sticks Wines in Sonoma, labeling the charge as a “meeting expense.”

The lawsuit claims the two later spent time together in Napa Valley wine country.

Even after announcing she would not seek reelection, Sinema continued to spend heavily from her campaign accounts.

Federal filings show her campaign paid out more than $241,000 for security-related expenses between October and December of 2024.

Spending continued even after she left the Senate.

Records show that in 2025 her campaign account paid for travel and security costs around the world. Those included luxury stays at a five-star hotel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Tokyo Edition Hotel in Japan, and the Nobu Hotel London Portman Square.

One curious expense raised eyebrows: $616 for what was labeled “security detail ski tickets” during a trip to Aspen, Colorado.

Sinema’s time in Washington was already one of the most turbulent in recent Senate history.

Originally elected as a Democrat, she stunned her party by switching to Independent status in 2022. Her frequent clashes with Democratic leadership made her one of the most polarizing figures in Congress.

She famously drew national attention during a 2021 vote on raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour when she dramatically voted “no” with a theatrical thumbs-down gesture on the Senate floor.

She also resisted Democratic efforts to eliminate the filibuster, a move that infuriated many progressives.

By 2024, facing plummeting support and a strong challenge from Gallego, Sinema announced she would not run again.

Gallego ultimately won the seat in the general election, defeating Republican candidate Kari Lake.

Now, instead of navigating the halls of Congress, Sinema is facing a different kind of fight in court.

The lawsuit filed by Ammel’s estranged wife remains active as Sinema pushes to have it dismissed.

Whether the case proceeds could hinge on a single question: where the relationship actually took place.

For now, the court filings have already exposed details of the former senator’s private life that few expected to see in public.
