Social media has erupted with confusion and speculation after footage and photos circulating online appeared to show Nicolás Maduro sporting multiple outfit changes and an unusually upbeat demeanor amid claims he had been taken into custody — a narrative that quickly went viral despite questions surrounding what actually happened.
According to RadarOnline.com, the buzz began after reports claimed Maduro was arrested during what was described as “Operation Absolute Resolve” in Caracas on January 3 and later transferred to U.S. custody in New York. Those claims have not been independently confirmed, but they didn’t stop social media users from obsessing over the images that followed.
Instead of focusing solely on the alleged arrest, many online zeroed in on Maduro’s appearance.
“Honestly, the weirdest thing to me in this whole Nicolás Maduro capture is how many outfit changes he did,” one user wrote.
Another joked, “Nicolás Maduro’s outfit changes have me curious. Did the Trump administration secure designer sponsors for this arrest so taxpayers didn’t have to fund his capture?”
Beyond the wardrobe chatter, Maduro’s demeanor also raised eyebrows. In several widely shared images, he appeared relaxed — even smiling — while being escorted by agents said to be with the DEA.
“Why does this look staged?” one user asked. “Something just doesn’t add up.”
Another added, “Why is Nicolás Maduro always smiling? What does he know that we don’t?”
One outfit in particular drew outsized attention: a gray Nike Tech Fleece jacket and matching joggers reportedly worn by Maduro during part of the alleged transfer. Social media users quickly pointed out the retail price of the set, claiming it sparked a sudden surge in online purchases.
The online frenzy intensified after Venezuelan officials publicly demanded proof that Maduro was alive. In response, Donald Trump posted what he described as photographic evidence on social media, further fueling debate and disbelief.
Trump later addressed the situation during a press conference, where his own appearance and delivery quickly became another trending topic. Viewers accused him of slurring his words, repeating himself, and even appearing to nod off while speaking.
“He looks like he’s about to fall asleep standing up,” one commenter wrote.
Another said, “Something is very wrong. He can barely get through his remarks.”
Before the press conference, Trump had posted on Truth Social claiming the U.S. had carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and that Maduro and his wife had been captured — a statement that only added to the chaos online.
