A Republican senator’s new proposal to “end dual citizenship for good” has sparked controversy — and could unexpectedly force First Lady Melania Trump and her son Barron to renounce their Slovenian citizenship.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, a staunch Trump ally and MAGA conservative, announced the plan this week during an appearance on Fox News. Moreno, who was born in Colombia and later became a U.S. citizen at 18, said his proposed legislation would require all Americans to pledge “sole and exclusive allegiance” to the United States.

“It was one of the greatest honors of my life when I became an American,” Moreno said. “It’s time to make that commitment mean something again. Being an American is an honor and a privilege — it’s all or nothing.”

The proposed measure, intended to curb what Moreno calls “divided loyalties,” could directly affect members of the First Family. Melania Trump, 55, was born and raised in Slovenia before becoming a U.S. citizen in 2006. Her son Barron, 19, automatically inherited Slovenian citizenship through her.

If Moreno’s bill passes, both Melania and Barron would be required to renounce their Slovenian nationality — or risk losing certain federal privileges.

Neither President Donald Trump nor the First Lady has commented publicly on the senator’s proposal.

Moreno’s plan highlights a growing divide inside the Republican Party over immigration and national loyalty. While hardliners argue that dual citizenship undermines American unity, critics say the bill is more about political theater than policy.

“It’s ironic that Senator Moreno, who proudly touts his immigrant story, is now going after the First Lady — another immigrant who embodies the American dream,” said political analyst Dana Whitaker. “This kind of legislation is red meat for the MAGA base, but it risks alienating suburban voters who admire Melania.”

While the debate swirled in Washington, Melania appeared unbothered. The First Lady unveiled her 2025 White House Christmas theme — “Home Is Where the Heart Is” — on X (formerly Twitter) on December 1.

“This Christmas, let’s celebrate the love we hold within ourselves and share it with the world,” she posted alongside a video tour of glittering decorations.

But the holiday cheer quickly turned sour online. One critic mocked, “She literally lives in Florida to stay away from her old demented husband.” Another added, “Who cares about Christmas stuff? We know what she really thinks of it.”

Even late-night TV joined in. On The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon teased the First Lady’s decorations, joking that this year’s nativity scene would feature “a cow and a dinosaur — straight from Trump’s cognitive test.”

The comedian then dropped a sharper punchline: “Maybe an Advent calendar — but behind each door is a name from the Epstein list.”

The audience gasped, but Fallon grinned. “Just something to spice it up,” he said.

Moreno’s bill is expected to be introduced formally in the Senate later this month, where it faces an uncertain path. Though the measure is unlikely to pass, it has already ignited debate over loyalty, immigration, and what it really means to be “100% American.”

As one political strategist noted, “When your own legislation ends up targeting the First Lady of the United States — you might need to rethink your headline.”
