JD Vance ‘Desperate’ to be President

Vice President JD Vance tried to play the loyal soldier Thursday night—but ended up walking straight into the political quicksand he’s been trying to avoid for months.

During a tense appearance on Fox News, host Sean Hannity cornered Vance with the question every Republican insider has been whispering: Is he planning to run for president in 2028?

“I try to put it out of my head and remind myself that the American people elected me to do a job right now,” Vance said carefully, before conceding that once the 2026 midterms are over, “I’m going to sit down with the president of the United States and talk to him about it.”

The answer, short as it was, sent political observers into overdrive—especially since President Trump himself has been openly toying with the idea of handpicking his successor.

Inside the West Wing, the talk is no longer about whether Trump will anoint a successor—but which of his protégés he’ll crown first.

For months, the president has gleefully pitted his vice president, JD Vance, against Secretary of State Marco Rubio—two men who have become unlikely allies and uneasy rivals.

“They’re both talented, they’re both loyal, and they both think they can be president,” one senior Republican aide told Politico. “And Trump loves that tension. It keeps them close.”

Vance and Rubio have stood shoulder-to-shoulder in photo ops from Kyiv to Mar-a-Lago, but sources say the competition is heating up behind the scenes. “Trump’s got them in a cage match,” a former campaign adviser said. “Whoever flatters him more wins the next headline.”

During the interview, Vance tried to shift the focus toward Trump’s record, warning that Democrats would “try to screw up a lot of the great things the president has done” if they make gains in 2026.

“We’ve got to do everything we can to win these midterms,” he said, adding, “If we do a good job, the politics will take care of itself.”

But his insistence that he hasn’t thought about running sounded hollow after earlier comments to the New York Post’s “Pod Force One.” Just weeks ago, Vance claimed there was “no tension” between him and Rubio, calling the Secretary of State “my best friend in the administration.”

That podcast episode ended in surreal fashion—with the two men joking about alien life and dismissing rumors of a rivalry. “Marco and I have bigger things to worry about than space creatures,” Vance said at the time.

The president has made no effort to dampen the speculation. Despite being constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, Trump has repeatedly teased a “comeback campaign” for 2028.

“I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,” he said at a rally last month, grinning as the crowd chanted “Four more years!” “But we’ve got a lot of great people waiting in the wings.”

Those “great people” seem to be taking the hint. With Vance emerging as a populist firebrand and Rubio positioning himself as the foreign policy brain of the administration, the Republican Party is quietly preparing for a Trump-endorsed showdown that could define its future.

“Trump may not be on the ballot,” said political strategist Lina Morales, “but make no mistake—he’ll be the one pulling the strings.”

For now, Vance insists his focus is on helping Trump’s economic agenda survive the midterms. But even his allies admit the ambition is hard to hide.

“He’s been studying Trump’s every move,” a former Senate staffer told Axios. “He wants to be Trump 2.0—but with less chaos.”

Whether the president agrees remains to be seen. As one longtime Republican operative put it bluntly: “Nobody outshines Donald Trump in his own spotlight. Not even his vice president.”
