Jim Avila, a longtime face of American broadcast journalism and one of ABC News’ most respected correspondents, has died at 69 after what colleagues described as a “long illness.”

ABC anchor Diane Macedo confirmed the news Thursday, remembering Avila as a man who “faced his health issues with courage.”

A Reporter Who Never Backed Down

Avila’s career spanned decades of political showdowns, White House briefings, and hard-hitting investigations. For nearly 20 years, he served as a Los Angeles-based correspondent for ABC News, covering the country’s biggest legal and political stories — from justice reform to consumer rights.

Between 2012 and 2016, Avila joined the elite ranks of the White House press corps, bringing his signature sharp questions and measured delivery to national television during one of the most polarized eras in American politics.

“Jim was the kind of reporter who could hold power to account without ever losing his calm,” said a former ABC colleague. “He had this rare mix of toughness and empathy — that’s what made viewers trust him.”

Award-Winning Coverage and Personal Battles

In 2015, Avila won the prestigious Merriam Award for his groundbreaking coverage of the Cuban government’s release of U.S. contractor Alan Gross — a story that marked a turning point in U.S.-Cuba relations. He was also a regular correspondent for ABC’s flagship program 20/20, where he exposed corruption, misconduct, and consumer scams across the nation.

Behind the camera, Avila fought his own battle. His brother donated him a kidney in 2020, a lifesaving gesture that allowed him to recover and return to journalism. Though he left ABC the following year, Avila wasn’t done telling stories.

“Retirement was boring,” he joked to the Times of San Diego in 2022, when he joined ABC San Diego as a senior investigative reporter. “I still had too many questions to ask.”

Remembering a Legacy of Truth

ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic paid tribute to Avila in a heartfelt statement, writing, “We send our deepest condolences to his family — including his three children, Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. Jim’s commitment to truth and integrity shaped our newsroom for decades.”

Friends and colleagues have flooded social media with tributes celebrating a journalist who embodied old-school reporting values — accuracy, decency, and relentless pursuit of the facts.

“Jim Avila was one of those reporters who reminded you why journalism matters,” one ABC producer wrote. “He never chased fame. He chased truth.”
