In a political move few saw coming, Christine Pelosi — attorney, activist, and daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — announced she’s passing on the chance to run for her mother’s coveted San Francisco congressional seat. Instead, she’s turning her sights closer to home: a campaign for the California State Senate.

Nancy Pelosi, now 85, announced her retirement from Congress last week, marking the end of an era in national politics. Under President Trump’s second administration, she has remained one of his most vocal critics, calling his policies “an assault on American democracy.”

Her daughter’s campaign, while separate in scope, echoes the same spirit. Christine has framed her run as a fight against “authoritarian creep” under Trump’s Washington.

“The stakes are enormous,” she said in her announcement. “Women’s rights, voting rights, and our planet’s future are all on the line. Sacramento is where the resistance must begin again.”
