As America weathers a second Trump presidency with growing economic anxiety and political division, former First Lady Melania Trump is facing fresh backlash for what critics call a “shameless” attempt to cash in on her former White House wardrobe—this time, to the tune of a quarter-million dollars.

In a move that stunned even her closest allies, Melania auctioned off a signed white hat she once wore during a 2018 state visit from French President Emmanuel Macron. The starting bid? A staggering $250,000. The item, part of her so-called “Head of State Collection,” included a watercolor portrait of herself and an animated NFT. But the most eye-catching detail wasn’t the artwork—it was the glaring lack of transparency around where the money was going.

Melania’s website vaguely promised that “a portion of the proceeds” would benefit foster children seeking access to tech education. But nowhere was it specified how much would actually reach those in need. The opacity drew swift condemnation from ethics watchdogs and political analysts alike.

“Let’s be honest—this wasn’t charity, it was commerce,” said Sasha Bellamy, a political ethics expert at Georgetown. “It’s a textbook example of exploiting public service for private gain, and it’s something we’ve come to expect from the Trump brand.”

A former senior Trump White House official was even more blunt: “It’s unseemly. She’s trying to build a nest egg on the back of the American people who never elected her but paid for her platform.”

The 55-year-old former model, whose tenure as First Lady was marked by both silence and controversy, wore the custom crepe hat—designed by her personal stylist Hervé Pierre—to match a Michael Kors suit during the Macrons’ visit. At the time, her fashion choice was praised as elegant and diplomatic.

That perception didn’t last.

Four years later, she bundled the item into an auction that included a digital NFT and her own stylized portrait. It was billed as “collectible history.” Critics called it a cash grab.

“She’s selling off White House memorabilia like it’s an estate sale,” quipped one former friend, who asked to remain anonymous. “What’s next—the ‘I Really Don’t Care’ jacket?”

That controversial green Zara jacket—emblazoned with the words “I really don’t care, do u?”—was worn by Melania during a 2018 trip to visit migrant children detained at the border. The image became iconic, and not in the way her team had hoped.

“It was a turning point,” said Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women. “That moment captured how out of touch she seemed with the country’s pain. Selling her hat just cements that.”

Brower told CNN that Melania’s auction “lends credence to the notion that the Trumps were always shameless about making money—and that Melania keeps proving she’s a Trump through and through.”

The backlash didn’t stop at pundits. Even longtime associates of the former First Lady demanded clarity on the financials.

“If she’s going to monetize her image from her White House years, fine—but disclose where the money is going,” said one former friend. “This isn’t Slovenia. This is America, and Americans want transparency.”

As the U.S. enters the final stretch of 2025 under President Trump’s second administration—with the Department of Education under siege, abortion rights rolled back in several states, and widening economic inequality—the timing of Melania’s luxury auction couldn’t feel more disconnected from everyday Americans.

“Families are struggling to afford rent,” said one progressive strategist on X (formerly Twitter). “Meanwhile, Melania Trump is out here auctioning hats for $250,000 like it’s Sotheby’s. It’s beyond tone-deaf—it’s grotesque.”

  1. You critics are so stinking petty. Grow up. Mind your own business and leave her alone. If you can\’t say something nice do the world a favor and shut the hell up. Get a life and find some real meaning and stop wasting your time on earth with garbage.

  2. Cheap and classless. She could have donated to a worthy cause but no, one more dollar, the greed is crazy.Sent from my iPhone

  3. All money either of them have gotten has gone to charities and you all know that. Tell me what did Biden’s, Obama’s, Clinton’s, Bush’s all do with their paycheck in Oval Office? Not a penny. Tell me how many items of other First Lady’s have been sold and money given to charity? Not a penny. So who has come out of the Oval Office or government jobs richer then went in? Not the Trumps that’s for sure. He uses his own money for things so answer me this? Did any other President ever use his own money for anything in the White House? No they just stole items from the White House when they left. So do your research before barking up the wrong tree. Now we will see who can come up with truth on these matters. While checking find out out how much money each family actually spend on wardrobes, pricey items, trips, vacations and family members also. I don’t recall the entire Trump family taking any government vacations. How about Biden’s entire family vacations for 12 years, Obama’s eight years, Clinton’s eight years and Bush’s many years. Do your research before open mouth. This one will be a fire storm now. Truth matters.

  4. Y’all are just jealous of her! Good for her! I’d do it, too! But them democrats can make up fake scams & spend trillions of dollars! If Obama’s wife did it, y’all would say how smart she is & love her for doing it!
