Tragedy struck on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef when an 80-year-old woman was found dead just a day after she went missing during a remote island hike.

The solo traveler failed to board a Coral Expeditions cruise ship on Saturday, Oct. 25, during a visit to Lizard Island off Queensland, Australia. Authorities say she had been hiking Cook’s Look peak and reportedly stopped to rest while the rest of her group continued to the ship.

Queensland Police confirmed they are investigating the “sudden and non-suspicious death” of the woman, who was found the next day. Reports suggest she may have fallen from a cliff while exploring the area.

Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield said the cruise line immediately launched a search and rescue operation once the woman was reported missing. “Following the operation, Queensland Police notified us that the woman had been found deceased,” he said, adding that the company is offering full support to her family.

The cruise had 120 passengers and 46 crew members on board at the time. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
