Pennsylvania Democrats are quietly preparing to take on one of their own — Sen. John Fetterman — as frustration mounts over his growing alignment with President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric.
According to Democratic strategists familiar with the discussions, several prominent party figures — including Rep. Brendan Boyle, Rep. Chris Deluzio, and former congressman Conor Lamb — are being floated as potential primary challengers in 2028. “There’s a sense that John’s gone rogue,” one longtime Pennsylvania Democrat told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “He’s popular, yes, but this isn’t the Fetterman we fought to elect.”
Since Trump’s stunning return to the White House earlier this year, Fetterman has emerged as one of the most unpredictable voices in the Senate. He has praised Trump’s “toughness” on Iran and Israel, defended his administration’s border crackdowns, and even called the former president’s 2024 hush-money conviction “politically motivated.”
Fetterman has also condemned fellow Democrats for branding Trump an “autocrat.” That comment, delivered during a televised panel in Boston in June, sparked outrage across progressive circles. “It’s hard to understand what he’s doing anymore,” said one Democratic Senate aide. “He’s giving cover to a man who wants to dismantle everything Democrats stand for.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Fetterman was photographed dining with Trump at Mar-a-Lago shortly before the inauguration — a meeting he dismissed as “no big deal.” But for party officials, it was a red flag.
Fetterman’s potential rivals have kept their cards close but not silent. Rep. Boyle, known for his fiery floor speeches and staunch defense of labor rights, hinted at frustration with Fetterman’s positions. “Pennsylvania deserves a senator who reflects our values — not Trump’s,” Boyle said at a recent union rally in Philadelphia.
Conor Lamb, the former Marine and moderate Democrat who lost to Fetterman in the 2022 primary, has reportedly been approached by donors encouraging him to run again. “There’s a lane for someone who can bring the party back together,” one Democratic operative told Axios.
In classic Fetterman fashion, the senator brushed off the rumors with a sarcastic text to reporters: “Enjoy your clickbait!” When pressed further, he declined to elaborate, citing an article labeling him “one of the least Trump-aligned Democrats in the state.”
Still, insiders say the rift runs deeper than headlines. His calls for Democrats to “tone down the rhetoric” following far-right activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination have drawn sharp backlash. “That was the last straw for many of us,” said a Pennsylvania Democratic committee member. “Instead of standing up to Trump’s toxic politics, he’s lecturing Democrats about civility.”
What’s next for Fetterman remains unclear. Those close to him say he’s considering a 2028 presidential run — a move that could split the Democratic vote in a post-Biden landscape. “He’s built a brand around authenticity and rebellion,” said a former campaign aide. “But there’s a thin line between independence and alienation. And John’s walking it.”
Whether he runs for reelection or higher office, one thing is certain: the fight over Fetterman’s future is already shaking the foundations of Pennsylvania’s Democratic establishment.
