California Governor Gavin Newsom isn’t backing down after Donald Trump Jr. took a swipe at him online — and his comeback might just be one of the most savage political clapbacks of the year.
It all started when Newsom’s press office changed its profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) to an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump as Marie Antoinette, complete with powdered wig and royal gown. The tongue-in-cheek caption read, “In honor of our Queen!” — a clear jab at the president’s lavish new $200 million White House ballroom project, which Newsom’s team has blasted as “out of touch” amid a government shutdown.
Trump Jr. fired back almost instantly, posting, “I thought you guys loved men who dress up as women?”
But Newsom’s team didn’t miss a beat. Within hours, they fired off a brutal response featuring two resurfaced photos — one of Vice President JD Vance in drag during his Yale Law School days, and another of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani wearing a blonde wig while Donald Trump himself pretended to nuzzle his chest in a comedy skit back in 2000.
“you guys sure do!” the governor’s press office wrote alongside the photos.
The Vance image, originally obtained by The Daily Beast, shows the then-law student in a blonde wig and short skirt, playing beer pong with classmates. The Giuliani photo came from the annual Inner Circle Show, a satirical media event where the future president flirted with the then-mayor for laughs — a moment later resurfaced by Stephen Colbert in 2016.
After the exchange went viral, Newsom’s office swapped its profile photo back to the California state flag, but the damage was already done — and the internet had plenty to say.
The original “Marie Antoinette” jab referenced Trump’s plan to nearly triple the size of the White House with a 90,000-square-foot ballroom expansion, partially funded by corporations including Google, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Palantir, according to CBS News.
The feud has an awkward personal twist too — Trump Jr. was previously engaged to Newsom’s ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle. The two began dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2020 before splitting in 2024. Newsom and Guilfoyle were married from 2001 to 2006.
