At Marine Corps Base Quantico this week, President Donald Trump startled his own generals with a rare confession: at 79, he struggles with something as simple as going down stairs.

“I’m very careful. You know, when I walk downstairs—like I’m on stairs like these stairs—I walk very slowly. Nobody has to set a record. Just try not to fall,” Trump said, pacing the stage before hundreds of senior military leaders who had been ordered to Virginia on short notice.

The president, who often ridiculed his predecessor Joe Biden for tripping on staircases, told the assembled brass, “Every day, the guy’s falling down stairs,” before adding that he takes extra caution not to meet the same fate.

Trump’s aside may have been an attempt at humor, but it was also strikingly personal. The oldest man ever to serve in the Oval Office has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory condition that makes standing and walking more difficult, especially for extended periods. According to aides, Trump also takes aspirin for bruising caused by excessive handshaking — bruises he has reportedly concealed with makeup during public appearances.

“It’s not the image of strength he wants to project,” one former White House physician told this outlet. “You can’t mock Biden for falling when you’re clinging to the rail yourself.”

Trump, however, continues to dismiss health concerns. After tripping in July while boarding his plane back from a golf weekend in New Jersey, he quickly steadied himself, smiled, and waved at cameras. But the stumble did not go unnoticed.

The staircase remarks came during a meandering, hour-long address that included boasts about military strikes in the Caribbean Sea and warnings that “America is under invasion from within.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, now formally styled “Secretary of War” under Trump’s second term, had summoned nearly 800 top generals and admirals for the gathering.

For many in the room, the president’s fixation on stairs seemed oddly trivial compared to the high-stakes agenda. “We were expecting strategy,” one officer told reporters afterward, “not a lecture on how to walk down steps.”

Trump’s admission carries a twist of irony. During Biden’s presidency, conservatives and pro-Trump media mercilessly replayed clips of Biden tripping on Air Force One, using them as shorthand for weakness. Biden eventually adapted, wearing special shoes and using shorter staircases.

Now, Trump faces the same scrutiny he once weaponized. “This is what happens when you build your politics around mockery,” Democratic strategist Maria Cardona said. “Reality catches up.”

Despite the momentary awkwardness, Trump tried to turn his stair-strategy into a leadership lesson. “Be cool,” he advised his generals. “Be cool when you walk down, but don’t bop down the stairs.”

For a commander-in-chief who once prided himself on projecting unshakable strength, it was an unexpectedly human admission — and one Democrats are already pointing to as a symbol of the contradictions defining Trump’s second term.

  2. Omg he’s careful of stairs and admits it??? Omg what news. Let’s see first he’s not the oldest president to ever sit in the White House as Biden was 82 when he left! More bad news by nextgen!

BTW Democrat Icon and the longest serving President couldn’t even walk let along use stairs!!! Did that make FDR unfit for office?? NO
SAME HERE! BIDEN WAS UNFUR BECAUSE HE WAS THERE MENTALLY!

  3. My gosh!
What are you liberals going to find to pick at him about, next ?
He’s cleaning up the mess the former administration left this country in. You can’t admit it so you have to find something to ridicule him about.! As for bruising easily, that comes with age.
If you all live long enough, you will experience it yourself!
I worked for the DuPont Company for 30+ years starting at the age of 20, and if we were seen going up or downstairs without holding on to a rail, we could be written up as a safety violation. So “ better safe than sorry huh”🤔
