Get ready to go plaid again—Rick Moranis is dusting off his giant helmet and stepping back into live-action after nearly three decades away from the big screen.
The beloved star of Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and Little Shop of Horrors is officially reprising his role as the hilariously menacing Lord Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2, the long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 sci-fi spoof.
And he’s not the only one blasting back into orbit. Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), George Wyner (Colonel Sandurz), and Brooks himself (as Yogurt, the Yoda-like guru) are all suiting up once again. They’ll be joined by new faces Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
Amazon MGM just confirmed the full cast and dropped a behind-the-scenes table read photo to prove production is officially underway. The film, directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), is eyeing a 2027 theatrical release.
As for the plot? Well, in classic Mel Brooks fashion, details are hilariously vague. The press release teased: “The title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.” Translation: expect the same over-the-top parody vibes as the original, this time skewering everything from Star Wars to Star Trek and beyond.
The project marks Moranis’ first on-screen role since 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. The actor famously stepped away from Hollywood after his wife, Ann Belsky, passed away in 1991, only occasionally doing voice work. Fans nearly saw him return for another Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel in 2020, but the pandemic stalled production.
Now, at long last, Lord Dark Helmet is making his comeback—and fans are already screaming “May the Schwartz be with you!”
